my ps3 doesn't have sound.

hey guys, looking for some advice. I bought a Yamaha HTR6050 receiver yesterday and i tried hooking up my PS3 to it so i can watch movies and play games on surround sound. This is how it is hooked up.

PS3: HDMI---->DVT/CBL input on receiver.

TV: HDMI---->HDMI monitor OUTPUT on receiver.

from what i'm aware of is that HDMI carries both audio+video but i cannot hear sound through my external speakers. I can only hear the sound through my tv speakers. I have my DVD player hooked up through component cables and the (red/yellow) audio cables and it works fantastic.

What am i doing wrong??

Re: my ps3 doesn't have sound.

Hook up the optical audio output from the PS3 to one of the receiver's optical audio inputs, and make sure that input is selected on the receiver when you are playing the PS3.

On the PS3, you also need to tell it what method you're using for sound. From the crossbar interface, go to Settings, scroll down to Sound and choose your configuration from the list.
