Survivor: Micronesia (Fans vs. Faves) Premieres 2/7/08 - Page 8

Re: Survivor: Micronesia (Fans vs. Faves) Premieres 2/7/08

Now, it looks like it'll be another final 3 tribal council to decide the money because Eliza was the first of the jury, and with 10 in the mix, no way they have a jury of 8 (too dicey to get a tie, though it's still possible to have 2 people tie with 3 people and 7 votes).

Re: Survivor: Micronesia (Fans vs. Faves) Premieres 2/7/08

It was traditionally 10 at merge with the jury starting at 9 (the first person kicked out after megre was not part of the jury).

Ever since they went to 3 finalists (which I don't like), they have had anywhere from 8-9 jurors.

I assume they have a final tie breaker that they haven't revealed yet, and haven't had to use it since Cook Islands started the final 3.

"It took me hours to make that" was one of many, many highlights. The fake idol discussion between Jason and Eliza was one of the funniest moments in Survivor history. The interesting part is that Jason was so quick to offer it to Eliza -- had he held onto it and played it later, that would have been the funniest moment in Survior history.

"It's a stick."

"I know."

"That cann't be the idol."

"Why not?"

"Because it's just a stick."

"I know. So?"

"So it cann't be the idol."

"Why not?"

"Because it's a stick."

"I know."

etc, etc, etc

Re: Survivor: Micronesia (Fans vs. Faves) Premieres 2/7/08

John, that exchange between Eliza and Jason had me howling with laughter. In a very dimwitted way, Jason's "logic" was unassailable: he found it where the HII was supposed to be, it has a face - therefore it's the idol, no matter how unlike it is to any previous idols.

One of the best episodes ever.

And let me reiterate: Amanda - so effin' hot.

May I just ask...does anybody actually like the final three facing the jury? I still consider it the worst thing to ever happen to the show, and it's the only reason the otherwise amazing China isn't in my top four seasons.

The show has really had an issue with not knowing when to give up on twists. Exile Island overstayed its welcome (another positive aspect of China was no EI), hidden idols have provided a lot of great moments but could use a season off, the final three...terrible from the start and gets more annoying each time.

Re: Survivor: Micronesia (Fans vs. Faves) Premieres 2/7/08

I like the three finalist system because in the past few years it has enabled stonger players to make it to the final. In Exile Island the three finalists were Aran (yoga teacher and nonentity the entire game) and some woman non-entity and Terry, owner of the immunity idol and awesome challenge player (second only to Ozzie in my book). In the end the two non-entities made the final and I couldn't care less who won. Go back to past shows and add the third place finisher and almost always it would make the vote closer and more interesting.

But the thing is, you can't just take the third placer and add them to the finals because if people were playing for a final three, they would drop players like Rudy, Kathy, and Rob Cesternino a round or two earlier. More likely than not, every endgame would play out like Fiji and China, with one strategist facing off against two players (s)he dragged to the end.

Me too. Howling. I had to pause it over and over to finish laughing. Great stuff!

Ozzy (after Jeff throws the face/stick in the fire)-"Jeff! That took hours to make!!"

Re: Survivor: Micronesia (Fans vs. Faves) Premieres 2/7/08

About the only thing that would have been funnier than how the fake immunity idol scene played out would have been if Jeff and the CBS team played along and announced, "O.K. Eliza has played the immunity idol so she can't be voted off. That means that Ozzy.......

HAS BEEN PUNKED!!!"

The look on Ozzy's face would have been priceless!

Actually, the way that it played out was funny enough. Finally a couple of twists that are making a rather mundane season (to me) worth a look or two. Man cannot live by Amanda views alone.

Re: Survivor: Micronesia (Fans vs. Faves) Premieres 2/7/08

Best episode yet. I too was laughing so hard from that exchange between Eliza and Jason. I am still a bit confused as to why she went a head and played it, knowing that it wasn't the idol. I mean she is a Survivor veteran and should know they do not skimp on the props. That was just so weird to me.

Ozzy's reaction was by far one of the best (followed by James laughing his ass off), when Probst threw the idol into the fire.

I was even more giddy when Eliza revealed that ozzy had the idol. Erik's face was like " Man that was suppose to be a secret". So funny.

We kept rewinding that whole scene over and over.

Ozzy better figure things out and start paying attention or he will get blindsided just like James did and not play the idol.

Re: Survivor: Micronesia (Fans vs. Faves) Premieres 2/7/08

Jason was very funny in that exchange. When he says "I know. So?" The look on his face was saying "Damn. She's right! This is just a stick, I knew it all the time, and I'm going to be on worldwide TV being laughed at!"

I also laughed when Elexis used past tense. Oops!

I think you just answered your own question. According to Eliza, she played the idol to "out" the fact Ozzy had the real one to everyone else. I think she might also have been holding on to a glimmer of hope it was real.

Gotta agree...Probst (and the editors) played the revelation with all the timing of a great comedian. They made it look like Ozzy was about to have an attack as they "let" Eliza have immunity!

Re: Survivor: Micronesia (Fans vs. Faves) Premieres 2/7/08

I couldn't imagine being on a show like this and just assuming that funky looking stick (that was found where the clues said it was) was just a stick and not the real deal until the bitter end. Yep, she definitely had a glimmer of hope.

In a future season, they should throw a curve and produce something that looks like Ozzy spent an hour scrapping a stick with rocks and shells. That would be funny too...to have everyone guessing.

Re: Survivor: Micronesia (Fans vs. Faves) Premieres 2/7/08

That's very good news (about Survivor going HD). I'm looking forward to it. While I realize that early on it would have been difficult to use HD equipment the situation has changed with newer, smaller, less expensive cameras. I've always thought that some o the most spectacular HD visuals came from series that spotlight scenery, wonders of nature, etc. (Discovery HD, Equator, etc. etc.) Survivor certainly offers some spectacular scenery and other imagery that will benefit from HD viewing.

This should breathe new life into an aging franchise although I have to admit that things like fake immunity idols and competitions that are becoming more and more physically dangerous have kept my interest for longer than a lot of other "old" reality shows.

Re: Survivor: Micronesia (Fans vs. Faves) Premieres 2/7/08

Hallelujah!

I've been watching the show on the HD feed since Vanaatu, and at first, I thought it was HD because it was so much better looking than the SD cable feed. It's just going to look breathtaking in true HD. I might be able to get a friend who stopped watching to check it out just for the visuals.

My wife is going to flip.

First off, all I can say about that HD news (thanks, Patrick, for the post!) is "FINALLY!" Woo hoo! It will be a welcome addition to the telecast.

About this:

I disagree. I think it is the basic nature of the game itself--trying to succeed at the game (outplay, outlast...) while dealing with personalities and alliances and competition that makes the game interesting. I have found many of the additions over the seasons (HII, Exile Island) to be distracting and confusing and taking away from the essence of the game.

I realize I'm complaining about "false plot devices" in a show that is already one big false plot device...but I think the producers have gone overboard with some of their creations.

People who enjoy playing a game (chess, checkers, cribbage, dungeons/dragons, whatever it may be) don't mind playing the same game over and over because while the rules stay constant, the gameplay always changes. I kinda wish they'd leave things alone and not feel that they have to create more excitement by ratcheting the game up to another level when it's perfectly fine the way it is. The extremely physical challenges are one development I have really not liked. They make me cringe.

But bring on the HD and let's hope The Amazing Race makes the jump soon, too! There should be even less reasons for TAR to stay SD.

Great news. I watch LOST at abc.com streaming HD. It looks amazing most of the time and runs very smooth. I was amazed the first time I saw it. Survivor like that would be really really fun to watch.

Re: Survivor: Micronesia (Fans vs. Faves) Premieres 2/7/08

Well, we can just agree to disagree then Mike. I understand your analogy of Survivor to games like chess, etc. but in the case of Survivor after many years I see some of the new players merely mimicking what some other successful players have done with no originality on their part at all. This makes for a bit of boring gameplay for me. If every chess game took the same attack I would tire of it as well. On the other hand, there's nothing wrong with new players using former techniques to try to "outplay, outwit, etc" their opponents as long as they try to apply some new twists - especially since the other players have the same advantage.
But I'm in complete agreement with you regarding The Amazing Race in HD. That would be even more spectacular to me because they travel to far more locations in a season than Survivor so there would be greater variety in the imagery. Any way you slice it, both shows should be in HD in today's world.

Re: Survivor: Micronesia (Fans vs. Faves) Premieres 2/7/08

Indeed, Robert.

And on the "updates" to Survivor, the toughest ones for me have been the really physical challenges--physical in the sense of players going one-on-one in forums in which someone can get hurt. Those are difficult to watch for me. But that's just me, I guess.

The rest, like HIIs and Exile Island, to me seem like tampering with the rules--although I know, intellectually, that it's not. It's certainly not like I've stopped watching!

I find the concept quite stimulating actually. I remember first hearing about Survivor: Season 1 and thinking what a ludicrous idea for a TV show. Got hooked on Season 2 and never looked back (except to pick up Season 1 on DVD! ). In fact, it is amazing to watch Season 1 for any fan who may have missed it...because you really get the sense that they were flying by the seat of their pants and making it up as they go. So much of that which seems formatted now was "created" during that first season.

Re: Survivor: Micronesia (Fans vs. Faves) Premieres 2/7/08

I remember thinking it was the dumbest show ever when it premiered, yet I watched it out of curiosity. For the first 8 or so episodes, I kept thinking, "this show is so stupid. I don't even know why I'm watching". And then I started to actually enjoy the show (Colleen helped immensely).

I have never missed an episode. I've even watched the middle of the season rehashes they sometimes air.

I agree with RAF that if the producers didn't change the rules, there would be a single, finely honed strategy that the winners would use, and it would make the shows predictable.

Wow. I'm stunned you guys feel that way. To me, the personalities are all so different and all interact so differently with so many variables such as the mixing up of tribes that I cannot imagine any of the seasons becoming predictable.

I would contend there's no way the make-up of alliances, outcome of challenges, or winners of a season could ever be predicted. As in chess (or any game), once winning strategies have been developed by those who are good at them, those strategies are subsequently picked-apart and analyzed so they can be countered in future contests. Otherwise, a game is not successful (or challenging) and nobody would ever play it.

Maybe Monopoly would be a more clear example. The rules stay the same game-to-game but there are so many variables because of the dice and the decisions of strategy of buying properties and embellishing them...no two games will ever be identical or predictable.

Re: Survivor: Micronesia (Fans vs. Faves) Premieres 2/7/08

Chess is a great game of strategy. I love playing. But I wouldn't watch it. The same old Survivor would be plenty interesting for the players, but I wouldn't watch it. Some of the changes haven't worked and seemed to be too much of meddling. But some change every season is necessary. The players need to be kept off balance so that they are not planning their way through the challenges, merge, etc. They need to not know what is coming.

That's why it's so important that they carefully pick the players for each season too. Imagine a whole season of nothing but dull players who do nothing interesting. What I hate is when a bunch of players allow a one or a few to run the game without doing anything to shake it up. The Rob/Amber thing, for example.

Re: Survivor: Micronesia (Fans vs. Faves) Premieres 2/7/08

HD isn't good for everybody. Think of the closeups of Joe Torre in the dugout. Even some actresses who formerly relied on SD and heavy makeup. I'm thinking most people after not having showered or shaved for a few weeks may look a little iffy. Hoping for the best though. The landscape views should be cool. It'll be worth it just to get rid of the pillar bars.

Gotta take the good with the bad certainly. But Amanda-HD would be nice. Of course, they may have to be even more aggressive with the evil video out-of-focus tool. I guess we won't see the zits on her cute butt.
