In the cast profile I read before the season started, Probst actually commented that he would be surprised if Kathy wasn't the first one out. Basically, I think Jeff could see she wasn't cut out for it, could see she was on the verge of a breakdown, and to be honest I suspect he did (to a degree) actually respect her for coping as long as she did - look at the way he pointed to her repeated trips to Exile Island. I think normally when he attacks people to "quitting", it's because they could have gone on but chose not to. Here, he knew she couldn't go on, so there was no reason to criticise.
Still, I'm glad Kathy is gone, if only because I accidentally stumbled on a rumour that someone (probably not a spoiler anymore, but just in case)
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)had a nervous breakdown and actually attacked their own hand with a machete,
and Kathy seemed the most likely candidate for that. And I was a bit uncomfortable watching the show as entertainment if something like that did happen. With both Kathy and Chet gone, I can't see any other likely candidates for something like that, so I feel a lot more comfortable watching the show.
