from what I've read, the folks at the Sun are ticked off. Although they are laughing it off claiming that this isn't how a real newsroom is run. Simon used to work for them and he's still got a lot of bad blood from his experience.

Re: The Wire: Season Five (see post #1 re: SPOILERS)

So does that mean the show didn't even need the Baltimore Sun's permission to use the name?

Re: The Wire: Season Five (see post #1 re: SPOILERS)

Nope - i can't remember where i read it, but the Sun did give them permission to use their name.

Re: The Wire: Season Five (see post #1 re: SPOILERS)

Good to see Avon is still in the game. I think Marlo was just a little surprised to see him in prison.

Also I'm glad they are spending some time on the Bubs storyline - I've always had a soft spot for him.

As far as the media angle to this season I am loving it. I feel for the editor who is trying to do his job correctly and is consistently overuled by the paper's boss.

Re: The Wire: Season Five (see post #1 re: SPOILERS)

I loved all of the references to past seasons that came up in this episode:

McNulty using the last words spoke by Bodie when they met on the park bench last season - "The game is rigged"

Bunk talking about McNulty (and I'll paraphrase) - There he goes caring when it ain't his turn

Avon and Sergei coming back

Freemon reading a magazine about miniature furniture when staking out Marlo

I think there are others, but that's all i can come up with from memory.

Can't wait to watch episode 3 tonight.

Re: The Wire: Season Five (see post #1 re: SPOILERS)

Whewww... episode 3 really kicks things into gear for this season. Don't get me wrong, I thought the first 2 episodes were great (come to think of it, I've liked every episode of all 5 seasons) but I've already watced episode 3 twice, and I'll probably watch it again.

I'll be bummed when this show is over.... I guess I'll start saving to buy all the seasons on DVD.

Dang. My cable box died yesterday so I got a replacement today but they said that On Demand won't be up for the new box until tomorrow. I guess it's something to look forward to.

Re: The Wire: Season Five (see post #1 re: SPOILERS)

Agreed about ep3. Nothing specific or earth-shattering, just the season building up and pieces getting set. It's all evolving very organically. Very engrossing. That hour goes by fast. I am always disappointed when the credits show up.

Give me more Clay Davis. That's all I have to say, You have to wonder where a lot of these actors will go after the series is over.

Yeah, I saw that commercial. I kept expecting him to bust out with, "sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiiiiii t".

Re: The Wire: Season Five (see post #1 re: SPOILERS)

Yeah we need one more of that "sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiit" before serie's end. Please.

Who actually thinks that Clay is going to be convicted?

I'm torn. I really hope is goes to prison, but i could see him getting off for some reason. Seems like that's what happens in the real world.

No spoilers here, but I just finished watching the 4th episode on in demand. This is the first time I can ever remember jumping up and yelling at the tv during a show... this show is killing me (in a good way).

Yeah, I caught that episode late last night and it's a doozy. The only bad thing about it is that it makes you want to watch episode 5 right away.

Wow, just watched the 4th episode as well. The wait for next week is going to be tough.

Damn -- that was cold! It's amazing how the entire episode (and even the one before) is put into a whole new perspective.

Re: The Wire: Season Five (see post #1 re: SPOILERS)

I used to think that Vern Schillinger on Oz was TV's most evil character. But Marlo in the past two seasons has gone beyond. He makes the Sopranos look like characters on Charles In Charge.

NEW YORK—Despite heaping lavish praise on the HBO crime drama The Wire, television critics across the country admitted Monday that not one of them has ever sat down to watch an entire episode of the show. "The Wire has done what no other television program has come close to achieving—namely, presenting the life of a decaying American city and doing so with the scope and moral vision of great literature," said New York Times critic Virginia Heffernan, who was surprised to hear that the groundbreaking series had already started its fifth and final season in early January. "It sounds fantastic. I really wish I had HBO." Many reviewers from top media outlets assured reporters that they would start watching the Peabody Award–winning show just as soon as the first season reaches the top of their Netflix queues.

Okay...I'm a little slow. Why did Marlo have to take out Prop Joe? What exactly did Cheese "give up"? Was this about the card game from last season?

And while we're on the topic of me being slow...I don't understand all this money gifting with the Russians. What is Marlo expecting in return?

As I understand it Marlo is going to take over as the exclusive supplier. The Russians had been getting their supply from Prop Joe, but Marlo is now going to be the source of their product and I think he was giving them the money as a good faith gesture. That's the way I understood the whole situation.

it's the other way around. The smack was being supplied to Prop Joe from The Greek. Marlo made his own connection with the Greek so he wouldn't have to deal with the Co-Op and Prop Joe.

Re: The Wire: Season Five (see post #1 re: SPOILERS)

Marlo is like a fucking cancer that won't stop growing and eats everything in it's path. Prop Joe's offing was the masterstroke, the culmination of a carefully engineered plan to become the King of the Hill. He systematically learned everything there was to learn from PJ, then cleanly removed him. I cannot believe the shrewd PJ didn't see that coming (not that I did or anything, I am just sayin'...)

One of my favorite scenes is with The Greek, the old man. Looking back, it's now pretty obvious that they understood that Prop Joe was done, and the Marlo would be their new customer. They would have preferred the reliable PJ remained of course, but it's not like they had a choice. You got to move the product somehow, and just have to roll with change of management on the streets.

Pretty amazing really. I am having a hard time thinking of a more ruthless character in any show. Barksdale & Stringer Bell we're even in the same league.

And something tells me that Marlo isn't going to be as 'benevolent' as Prop Joe when it comes to supplying the other guys in the co-op with product for a fair price.

Re: The Wire: Season Five (see post #1 re: SPOILERS)

Holy crap is Marlo ruthless. And Cheese is a fucking coward. Take out a guy taped to a chair and sell out Joe without having to face him. I hope he dies a coward's death. But on the Wire where being evil rewards you and having morals or a street code gets you dead, he'll probably end up in charge of everything.

Marlo's actions are the result of Major Crimes pulling the plug on Marlo. Why should Marlo stop killing? He hid his bodies for years, and even when they were discovered and the cops knew who put them there, they still can't touch him. He's riding a wave of power.

Omar hasn't killed yet, but there's no doubt he was ready to break his promise to Bunk when he had Slim Charles in his sights. Slim Charles is now without a sponsor. Wonder who he'll ally with? He and Cheese don't get along. He doesn't like Marlo and he has nowhere near the soldiers that Marlo does. He could join up with Omar for the short term as they have similar interests, but he's a dealer and Omar won't work long with a dealer. Bring back Brother Muzzone or another hitter? Damn, this show is good (except for the serial killer thread. I still don't like how that is going.)

On the political side, Norese is one cold bitch.

Carver is a stand up guy with saying he's going to rat his own guy because that's the point of making a difference and doing the right thing. Can't bode well for him.

Marlo knows it too. That casual exchange with Herc in the lawyer's office was a masterstroke.

"Ever find that camera?"
"Cost me the job."

So much meaning in so few words.

Re: The Wire: Season Five (see post #1 re: SPOILERS)

Omar leaping out of the window reminded me of Batman.

I guess McNulty summed up The Wire when he said "What the fuck is wrong with this city?"
