Speaker Layout advise

Hi. I am a total newbie that has been lurking. I just got a house and bought some new stuff to set up in the living room. This will also be our primary location for entertaining guests, watching tv every day, movies often, and plenty of Wii and Xbox 360 games will have use. We do not have a dedicated theater - this is essentially it.

My problem is that the room layout only allows minimum options and the basic idea of what we have decided upon is shown in the image attached. I know it is probably less than idea to utilize 7.1, or even 5.1, but what are the best options i have for speaker positioning?

I have a 60" Pioneer elite plasma, Onkyo TX-SR605 and some infinity speakers i've had for about 8 years now that seem to be sufficient. (5 are identical to each other, small maybe 8 or 10 inches tall, 2 are larger speakers in nice wood enclosures.) Eventually I will replace speakers, but it's not a priority at this time.

Should i try to utilize 5.1/6.1/7.1? Should i go for a sound bar type solution (one of those simulated surround bars)? Any ideas? any photos or others with similar layouts?

Thanks in advance for any and all replies, and i apologize for being so new and uninformed!

Re: Speaker Layout advise

If all the speakers are box types then you want the center channel at your display. I would use your larger cabinets as your left and right fronts. Making sure to distance them from the display. The theory is "Surround Sound" which is why I do not like the multi-channel bars. Place the sub at the front right corner.Place the LS & RS on the side behind the last row of seating. I am not sure how far the wall behind the seating is, but you could always put your other 2 there. I would stay with 5.1 and place the other in an adjoining room or patio.

Re: Speaker Layout advise

My family room is like yours except for the corner your display is in I have a fireplace. Then just to complicate things a bit more, there are windows on the left and right of the fireplace. I have changed mine twice now in just 5 weeks and looking to make one last alteration. I am fortunate to own my company and have my guys to perform the labor. Good luck, this stuff is fun!!
