Want to go HDDVD now but what else do I need ?

Thread Starter
My current setup consists of the following:
Yama DSPA1, Outlaw 5 ch.amp, DVDO ISCAN scaler, TAW dvd player via sdi output, Projector Mitsi HC1500.

Thinking of buying an HDDVD/BLU RAY player. Besides this, anything else I need to purchase for me to take full advantage of the video/audio improvements on high def movies ?

Need help-

Taking full advantage to me means you have an HDMI receiver/preamp with lossless codecs and a 1080P display.

You could make it work with what you have but you'll have to sacrifice some things. For instance if you want to play DTS master lossless tracks, there isnt' a single player capable of playing them back via analog outs so you'll have to live with the lossy core.

To try the advanced audio codecs vs. hearing them reencoded to DD/DTS, you'd have to get one of the models with 5.1 analog output + built-in decoders for the advanced formats (e.g. for HD-DVD HD-A35/HD-XA2, not HD-A2/A3/A30, Blu-ray I'm not as familiar), since your current DSP-A1 doesn't have HDMI capabilities.

You have a 720p projector so you won't get "full advantage" of the 1080p discs, but it's still going to be the best video available for your setup.

As the other guys have said, you won't be able to squeeze every last ounce of goodness from your player with your current set up. But so what? You'll have a noticeable improvement in picture and sound quality nonetheless. Over time and as budget permits, you can always upgrade other bits of the system, but I don't think you'd get a bigger single improvement than your proposed purchase of a high definition player.

To give an analogy - suppose all your furniture needs replacing, but the chair where you habitually sit in is worn through and is very uncomfortable to the point where you're having to sit on the floor. It's like saying 'if I change my chair, I'll be comfortable, but the rest of the furniture will look out of place, so I won't buy the chair and just stick with what I've got'. Being a sensible, rational being, you wouldn't do that - you'd buy the chair and then replace the other furniture as your budget permits. The same general principle applies to getting the player.

I have a 720p Projector (Sanyo Z3) for the HT and an older 1080i (Panny 53") set for the living room and I will tell you the 720p is no slouch so you will still get that theater look and feel. I personally feel you will enjoy the differences from SD as I have.

Re: Want to go HDDVD now but what else do I need ?

Like Brian said you will definitely tell a difference between SD and HD with the Mits HC1500. I started with a HC1000 and using audio via Toslink connections. While I didn't get the full audio experience the change in picture quality was quite amazing. I have since upgraded to a Yamaha rx-v1800 and am loving the uncompressed audio. So my point is, even if you don't have all the necessary equipment at this time it's still worth the upgrade given your current setup.
