I don't know who has knowledge of these things, but does anyone know when Criterion rights to Black Narcissus expires if we will have a region 1 version of Warner's superior edition that was issued in France and if so when that might be ?

Re: Black Narcissus Versions

I assume you mean superior in image, as Criterion's has some nice supplements as I recall...and the image isn't too bad, either...

I thought so too until I bought the Network version which blew Criterion away. The Warner disc even makes my Network disc look shabby - here's a comparison of the three at DVDBeaver.

I agree - the French DVD release is the best - I made my own hybrid DVD+R DL combining all the supps from the three releases and the superior image and sound from the French DVD.

Criterion's sister company Janus Films holds the North American rights to Black Narcissus so don't expect to see this title on any other label in the U.S. in the near future.

Re: Black Narcissus Versions

I had no idea that other versions existed. Those shots from the Warner version look fantastic. Guess I'll have to buy a French DVD. It does not have burnt-in subtitles, does it?

It's possible we might see the release of a revamped Criterion edition (ala Beauty & the Beast, The Third Man, Seven Samurai, etc.).
