In-wall/ceiling speakers vs bookshelf speakers

Do in-wall/in-ceiling speakers typically perform as well as bookshelf speakers? I like the look of the in-wall/in-ceiling stuff, but I don't see how they can sound as good since they aren't in any type of enclosure other than the wall itself or the attic space.

I've got some Klipsch RS-42 surrounds that are new in box and I'm tempted to sell them and get some in-ceiling surrounds. Good idea/ bad idea?

They can but not dollar for dollar...and not if installed where most people put in-wall speakers. When done right though they can sound excellent.
