Changes in Corporate Giving

In the past years our company has had weeks of gifts coming in from other companies. There is about 15 of us in the office and many days so many different food platters arrived that there was left overs to take home. Also many Christmas cards, calendars, pocket knives, laser pointers, pens, etc...

This year we have received about 1/2 the cards than other years. We usually decorate our front windows with them. Some companies have started sending e-cards. How impersonal. No more sitting and signing 400 cards for hours on end. Jut line up the e-mail addresses and push a button.

A few companies have started giving one lump $$$ donation to a charity rather than send these little gifts to everyone. Good income for the charity and good tax deduction for the company.

The calendars are getting less useful. Instead of one month per page, there are two or three months on each page. You are stuck with the same picture for three months and if you are on the third month, there is not a preview of the next month.

I guess we have enough of those little gadgets: folding clocks, laser pens etc... The laser pen is always good for keeping both the kids and the pets busy for hours. I am not ranting, just making observations. Have you noticed any changes?

Here is my e-card wishing all HTF members many blessings:

Seriously...the end of year parade of gadgets and food gifts have slowed considerably the last two years, although that may be because we've consolidated business with fewer vendors. No more giant cans of popcorn or ten pound blocks of chocolate, which I consider a good thing.

Try being a commercial operation but working on government contracts.... there are very explicite rules now for gifts over $25 and non-monetary gifts, the rules and regulations have increased ten-fold due to all those bribery scandels and government corruption.

Working for GameStop, before the company went public, each store would get a popcorn tin, thank you card and a gift or two...after going public it switched to just a thank you for your hard work card, and now this year, not even that. How shitty...and this is just concerning the company showing appreciation for its own people.

Geez, do people get jobs for the paychecks or to receive gifts? I don't remember any companies I worked for giving us gifts.

Many corporations (government contract or not) have started being very strict with similar policies. I work for a large company and we started having mandatory training on the subject about 2-3 years ago.

Corporate Giving - An oxymoron if I ever heard one

Re: Changes in Corporate Giving

I used to throw a big party (with help from my vendors) for my clients and employees (one each) at a nice restaurant with nice gifts for everyone and a year end bonus for the employees. My industry is now so overregulated that if I give a holiday card on too high quality paperstock I could be in trouble...

This year we received a tray of cookies, two tins of cashews, one tray and one box of ham biscuits, two boxes of chocolates, and a dozen calendars. Three of our suppliers gave lump donations to charities instead of gifts to everyone. I was also given a country ham and a laser pointer. Our company provided a cake for the office personnel.

Well, once a company goes public, it's all about pleasing the stockholders. They won't hesitate to crap all over the customers and employees if it'll make the stockholders happy.

Costco routinely gets taken to task by analysts for being "too generous" to their employees rather than maximizing stockholder dividends. They seem to be the exception, though. Most other companies have gladly gone in the opposite direction to please Wall Street.

I work for a large Govenment Contractor that designs and builds electronics for the military. As Jay H mentioned above, we never get holiday gifties.
