I 'll be doing a blind-buy with this one, in fact there's a lot of quality new releases on tap that I didn't get a chance to see in the theater so I might be doing a lot more BB's than usual over the next few months.

IMHO it isnt a reference PQ disc simply because of the way it was filmed. The film has a soft look to it.Its fitting, considering the subject matter but those expecting a killer PQ disc will be disappointed.

36 bucks at the local B&M. Dolby Digital Plus only. When is Warner going to get the message? If they are going to be charging higher prices for HDM they better at least provide LOSSLESS tracks on every release. To paraphrase:
[Zorg] ZERO lossless tracks........ZERO dollars!!!! [/Zorg]

I wouldn't mind reading that. Is it readily available on his site or is their link to it on HTF? The article must have been the one that was being quoted in the Ben-Hur thread. I posted my comment before opening that thread; otherwise, I would have realized that Warner was in process of addressing the lossless issue.

From the My Two Cents section:Quote:
| Finally, there was one other concern many of you Blu-ray enthusiasts had for Warner. Specifically, a lot of you said you wanted to studio to start including lossless audio on ALL Blu-ray Disc releases, both new and catalog. Rest assured, the right people have heard your concern (naturally, George was already aware of it) and you can safely assume that the studio intends to start addressing it in the near future. |

Thanks for that link. I read the article. I'll take back what I said about them getting the message. It appears that they did and will address the lossless issue. The day and date release for DVD and BD releases is also a step forward. Warner does appear to be serious about supporting HDM.

Jon, I assume you saw it in theaters based upon these comments, and are referencing the way it looked theatrically? HDD's Ken Brown assigned blame to a few issues specific to the transfer, not the original cinematog.
Blu-ray Review: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford | High-Def Digest
Even so, I would have given the video a much higher score based on its faithfulness to the filmmakers' intentions if the transfer wasn't hindered by several technical issues. First off, Warner has bizarrely crammed the 160-minute film onto a 25GB single-layer disc that simply leaves the transfer out in the cold. Compression issues continually creep into the image and I found myself confused by the lazy presentation. It doesn't help that the transfer's contrast levels are fairly average, leaving the film's beautiful cinematography looking like a flat, uninspiring series of still photographs. To top it all off, blacks sometimes crushed, whites randomly bloomed, and noise intruded on more than one occasion.
Worst of all, I couldn't take my eyes of a single flaw that evolved into a constant distraction -- the picture is plagued by some of the most obvious edge enhancement I've seen on a new release. Actors occasionally look superimposed onto the screen, dark hats appear disjointed from the rest of the image, and buildings on the horizon look as if they've been etched in against the bright skies. As an experiment, I ejected the disc and trotted to our guest bedroom to see how apparent the EE would be on a small, 27" LCD screen. Sure enough, the transfer's gangly halos still stuck out like a sore thumb -- as such, it's easy to imagine how ugly the edge enhancement is on a larger screen. This is a high definition release... does it really need such an artificial boost to its clarity?
Why would WHV move up the release date from 2/26 to 2/5 and release this movie-only disc of a 160-minute film on a BD25? It looks like this is another example of WHV's much-pilloried practice of authoring to the lowest common denominator/not doing anything on BD that they can't do on HD DVD. Now that they've announced exclusive BD support, why wouldn't they give what sounds like a very 'worthy' film the attention it deserves? They knew the film didn't get lots of attention from the Academy because Oscar noms were announced weeks before this pic's original and even accelerated release date. It seems like laziness to me.
It will be messy if the HD DVD streets on 2/26 with Dolby TrueHD.

I did finally see it in the theater and it looked about the same.I did notice the edge enhancement as well.

I finally got to see this after a "very long wait" from Netflix and loved it. The image quality didn't bother me as much as the lack of extras. The 30 minute doc was pretty good, but there was nothing about the film itself. Will this be revisited in the future do you think? This time with a 50GB BD and a second disc for extras.
