Criterion set to release Anthony Mann's THE FURIES (1950)

The Criterion Collection email newsletter for December gives a strong hint that they will be releasing Anthony Mann's strange Western / Film Noir / Tragedy hybrid film - The Furies (1950).

So with El Cid from The Weinstein Company in January, that's another two Anthony Mann films down.

Yeah... I kinda figured that... but what does the camel have to do with THE FURIES?

From the newsletter:

A year of Criterion newsletters also means a year of wacky animals clueing readers in to upcoming releases. The animals don’t always come from the films they’re hinting about, but they do relate to movies somewhere in the Criterion catalog.

There's a competition in the catalogue this week to match a group of animals with the films they reference, if you can match them up properly you can win a Criterion t-shirt.

Great news. Maybe Criterion could also release the noirs "The File on Thelma Jordon", "No Man of her own" and the romance "September Affair". This would be perfect.

Maybe the Eclipse line should have a sub-series - "Paramount Noir".

There isn't much chance that Paramount itself would release their own Noir line like Fox, Warner, and to a lesser extent Universal.

I just wish they'd do ONE EYED JACKS

Re: Criterion set to release Anthony Mann's THE FURIES (1950)

Criterion's relationship with Paramount is our only hope that their back catalogue gets released. I suspect it's a bit vulgar for Criterion's refined taste but I'd do cartwheels if Criterion got their hands on DeMille's Samson And Delilah.

I'll snap up that DVD of The Furies. The Cinemax channels aired it a couple of years ago. Stanwyck and Judith Anderson certainly had a "cutting" exchange in one scene (final score: Missy 1, Mrs. Danvers 0).

Those who don't have a copy of Thelma Jordon can record one off TCM at 8 p.m. ET on Jan. 18.

YES!!! This film has been on my 'most wanted' list for ages! You'll never look at a pair of scissors the same way again after seeing this flick!

The notorious MY SON JOHN cries out for a Criterion release. The subtext alone mandates a second disc.

I'm not familiar with this film, but Anthony Mann and Barabara Stanwyck automatically make this a must-own!

Sadly, wouldn't One Eyed Jacks need an extensive restoration before a Criterion release would be worthwhile? Maybe they could do the best they can from the best pre-existing I.P., then release it under their Eclipse brand. It would at least be as good as the best public domain versions, but it would be a legitimately licensed release, which would make me willing to buy it.

No chance for a release of that vulgar crap, they only release subtle and refined stuff like Armageddon and The Rock

I think all those Vistavision/Technirama movies would deserve much better but sadly they probably won't get the best possible or even acceptable treatment when in the public domain (One Eyed Jacks) or with scattered distribution rights (most of the Bronston epics). After all whoever puts out the money for a proper restoration is not benefitting from it by having the exclusive worldwide rights and thus all the potential profit from his investment. He has to be content with a segment of the market and often only with a limited timespan in which the movie can be marketed - this is absolutely counterproductive to the idea of investing significant funds to preserve the original film stock and also to bring a movie to home video in its best possible form.

Criterion seem to be forging a pretty good relationship with Paramount, so if anyone gets access to VistaVision elements for One Eyed Jacks it would be them.

But If previous video transfers have come from 4 perf 35mm elements, then it is possible no VistaVision I.P. exists. If that's the case then it would be pointless for Criterion to bother.

Maybe it is for the Brando estate to get the ball rolling on a proper preservation or restoration, but the fact Brando kind of walked away from the film towards the end means there is little chance of that.

Re: Criterion set to release Anthony Mann's THE FURIES (1950)

Wonderful news!
It looks like Criterion's long-held discrimination against the American western is finally coming to an end.
They're also adding Niven Busch's classic novel to the package.

Perhaps Criterion will follow up by releasing Mann's other western noir -- or is it a noir western -- DEVIL'S DOORWAY with Robert Taylor.

I add my voice to chorus urging Paramount and Criterion to sort out a proper edition of ONE-EYED JACKS.

Yeah! Nice unorthodox extra that.

Me too! Now that 'Ace In the Hole' and 'If....' have finally appeared, 'One-Eyed Jacks' is my most-wanted title on DVD (i.e. done properly, not those horrible public-domain issues). I hope Criterion will at least explore the possibilities of a restoration with Paramount and/or the Brando estate.

One of my favorite films and Gilbert Roland's character is really memorable to me. Of course, Miss Stanwyck is my all-time favorite actress.

She is one of the most sensual actresses from the period. The way she uses her voice makes her incredibly sexy. Double Indemnity was the first movie of hers I ever saw, and just listening to her speak, I can see how Fred MacMurray fell for her!!

I love how Gilbert Roland was Hollywood's miscellaneous ethnic guy - Greek, Spanish, Mexican, Italian, it didn't matter, he could do it all!

Re: Criterion set to release Anthony Mann's THE FURIES (1950)

I saw "The Furies" many years ago and loved it. This will be a definite buy.
And I will second a Criterion release of "Devil's Doorway," one I had never heard of until it was on TCM a couple of years ago. Very powerful.
