What Ever Happened To These PARAMOUNT Releases...???

Were they all canceled indefinitely?

Does anyone know if the studio intends to release them at all anymore?

They already produced the cover art and they seemed set on the release schedule... what happened? Did Paramount suddenly decide they weren't commercially viable or something?

Paramount decided to let Lionsgate keep the majority of the Republic Pictures movie catalog at the last minute, they also had a reissue of Highlander 2 slated before pulling it at the same time.

Wow! I don't even remember these titles being discussed. I've been dying to see "Body & Soul" & "Letter From an Unknown Woman".

Good old Paramount!! What a sorry excuse for a company

Shame really, had Paramount not gotten on this "we hate our back catalog" bender they've been on we might have seen a decent release of Force of Evil.

So that's that?

No Body & Soul or Dark Mirror, no Secret From Beyond The Door?

What does Lionsgate want with these titles anyway? When's the last time they've put out a decent release... do they even have plans for these films?

Surely, Paramount must've struck new transfers if they had completed artwork and everything prepped... they just decided to throw it all away and leave these films to further neglect?

Re: What Ever Happened To These PARAMOUNT Releases...???

The two crown jewels of the Republic catalog that have been consistently ignored are the Republic serials and the Max Fleischer cartoons. Not even a single-disc compilation of Betty Boop cartoons, but they did put out The Adventures of Captain Marvel in 2003.

From what I can find, the serials and Fleischer cartoons have been preserved and restored by UCLA Film & TV Archive for years. On VHS, I think nearly all of Republic's serials were issued (and all of the Boops were on laserdisc).

I guess from the start, it was easier for both parties to continue the contract rather than have to go through the rigamarole of returning the masters, creating new artwork to change logos, planning news releases, etc.

Plus,I'm not sure if Paramount did prepare new material on any of those releases. Lionsgate has been reissuing some of the newer Republic properties like LIVE NUDE GIRLS and THE MONSTER SQUAD in new 16x9 transfers, while FREEWAY and CADENCE are just straight ports of the old discs. So while I'm p.o.'ed that Lionsgate released a pan-scan JULIUS CAESAR, who knows if Paramount wasn't just going to do the same thing?

Why would Lionsgate want this whole package when neither party is particularly interested in it? Aside from the newer movies, I guess it's having the library, to say to retailers and rackjobbers that they have this huge backlog of titles, so that in turn they will believe that you can constantly offer them new releases, that there'll always be a supply of fresh product. Market share, so to speak.

Re: What Ever Happened To These PARAMOUNT Releases...???

Somebody just buy out Paramount's classic film properties please!

I say everyone on this forum pool together a hundred bucks a head and we'll put it into shares of our own company. We'll begin by rescuing Paramount's back properties...

Re: What Ever Happened To These PARAMOUNT Releases...???

The question is whatever happened to Paramount releases. Aside from tv on dvd, Paramount is the black hole of the dvd world. No property can escape onto dvd.

Re: What Ever Happened To These PARAMOUNT Releases...???

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that when the Artisan deal expires next time, Criterion will jump in and rescue these pictures. Criterion appears to have a good working relationship with Paramount, so I don't see this as implausible.

Can you imagine a 2-disc Criterion edition of "The Quiet Man" or "Invasion of the Body Snatchers"? What a potential treasure trove that would be.

Re: What Ever Happened To These PARAMOUNT Releases...???

Lionsgate seems to exist to suppress older films. I can not think of an eviler run DVD company.

They're not evil, just inept. Not all studios are fortunate enough to have people like George Feltenstein (at WB) in charge of catalog titles. Some studios look at film libraries mainly as collateral for new projects - which is the case with Hallmark and the Hal Roach films.

Of course, WB, Universal, and Fox have these libraries as collateral while exploiting the product well at the same time.
