Which DVD of Penny Serenade to buy??

Unfortunately this is probably going to be a case of "the best of the worst" but which version out there offers the best picture quality and technical specs?

I've seen discs by Madacy, Reel Entertainment, etc.

I'm sure there's about a half dozen public domain cheapies on the market and I don't suppose a studio like VCI will step up to the plate anytime soon to offer an alternative... so which company should I spend my money on?

Re: Which DVD of Penny Serenade to buy??

I'd like to tell you, but I've never picked one up. I keep hoping that TCM will surprise us with a quality telecast (perhaps auguring a superior DVD) but this morning's was the usual tatty transfer. A great film in need of some TLC.

VCI should really take this under their wing...

(Off-Topic) PS: Is there a way to switch back to the regular forum colors instead of these putrid fluorescent yellow/aqua marine thing that happened? I'm about to have a seizure...

Re: Which DVD of Penny Serenade to buy??

I think Columbia released an outstanding transfer of one of their PD titles...HIS GIRL FRIDAY, so I am hoping the same may happen for PENNY SERENADE. I was hoping the TCM would be an official Columbia upgrade, but no luck. They also still show pretty awful looking transfers of MY MAN GODFREY and NOTHING SACRED, and the latter has been beautifully restored by Disney, which TCM has a relationship with.

LOL I like the pee yellow myself. A little change works for me.

I picked up a copy at ToysRus of all places and it was only like 3 bucks. It was an Echo Bridge Home Entertainment release. I thought the picture quality was pretty good for a PD title, but I haven't seen the other releases so I can't compare. here's the site (remove space after www)

Re: Which DVD of Penny Serenade to buy??

Thanks! I just sent an email to VCI and received the following:

Hello,
Thank you for your email. I sent your email to the President of VCI and this is
what he had to say:

You can let this man know that this is a good suggestion and we will give it
serious consideration, especially if we think we can release a quality version
of it. And FYI, we will be releasing several more PD Classics beginning this
year from our archives. Also thank him for his nice comments; we really
appreciate them.

Hope this answers your questions.

Merry Christmas

Sounds good to me!

Coincidentally, according to Turner Classic Movies weekly schedule, this appears to be airing on Dec 27 at 3am.

Might want to set your TiVO's...

TCM's isn't too hot, either; it just ran last week. And while we're at it a restored or at least more refined CYRANO DE BERGERAC (1950) would be appreciated, too.
