Cold Case on DVD

Am I correct in assuming we will never see Cold Case on DVD due to music clearance rights, or is there hope yet?

Re: Cold Case on DVD

That's correct. Apparently the powers-that-be behind the series would rather spend the money on the music for the broadcasts, even if that means no DVD releases because they require the original music and won't ever change it. I recall this being asked about a while back somewhere, and that was basically the response.

Re: Cold Case on DVD

That decision will eventually haunt the producers in the long run- how stupid can you get? They could make mucho dinero from DVD sales, and yet they're cutting their own throats and angering the viewers who want the show on DVD.

Re: Cold Case on DVD

But have you watched COLD CASE? The music is an important part of the show. They use so much of it, they would have to sell the each episode for $10 just to make a profit on it.

They even advertise the music in the ads "A special episode with the music of Bob Dylan".

I'd love to see the series on DVD, but I can understand why it isn't, and wouldn't want to see it without the music (and I normally don't freak out about music replacement).

Re: Cold Case on DVD

Of course I watch the show, Jon! If the producers had brains they would've tried to make proper clearances for any future DVD release for any song they choose to use in an episode. I wonder why they haven't publicly talked about the DVD issue yet- maybe because they already know that the public would be P.O.ed at them about it!

Re: Cold Case on DVD

Personally, I couldn't care less about 'important' music/songs in TV shows/episodes, just replace it for all I care.

What good would talking about it do, other than create more threads like this one? Until they've got something positive to announce, they're better off not saying anything.

And I suspect that they are trying to clear songs as they go, but that's not always possible on a tight TV schedule.

Excuses, excuses.....

Re: Cold Case on DVD

Having a successful show on television nets far more than a successful TV DVD ever would. Producers' main concern is creating the show they want and making sure it stays on the air, not home video releases.

And this is a Jerry Bruckheimer production. I don't think he really wants or needs more money. He'd rather just stick to TV and syndication.

It's not an excuse as much as it's a reality. If they can't work out the details in time or getting the rights for home video (in addition to broadcast) exceeds the budget they have for the music, that's life.

Re: Cold Case on DVD

If you ask me, it's the fault of television producers ofr using so much music in television shows when they know that the show is going to see a DVD release.

DVD releases don't mean anything when producers want to keep the show on TELEVISION, and they are concerned first and rightfully with telling the stories they want to tell while the show is on the air, and in the case of this series the music selections are one of, if not the most important component of that storytelling. To use something else for the show being broadcast or to replace it for DVD would:

A) force them to change the story they want to tell, because they decide to use a song that doesn't have the same effect, and
B) ruin the story already told if the song was replaced for DVD.

Either way, the show itself suffers.

Re: Cold Case on DVD

In an ideal world when a show purchases a song to use in an episode it includes the rights to put that song onto DVD. Most of the artists getting money from that song use are rich enough generally as it is.

The thing is, it's not just the person singing who has a piece of the pie.

If I recall, and don't quote me on this because I could be wrong but apparently the reason why "Married...With Children" has a different theme song on DVD is because the songwriters behind the original 'Love and Marriage' song prevented it for whatever reason.

Or it could be a producer of the company who released the song in question. Point is, this is too complicated to just assume it's a money-hungry artist every time.

true its more the first part of the sentence, that would be good in an ideal world
