How many speakers to add to my old setup?

Thread Starter
I currently have an old Sony Pro-Logic receiver and 2 rear, 2 front, a center, and a powered sub.

1. What additional speakers will I need to take advantage of the latest and greatest audio encoded on Blu-Ray and HD DVD by a receiver, such as, the Denon 3808CI?

2. Can I add speakers to my current setup without it being a noticeable sound problem, since the speakers will be of different types?

Thanks.

Re: How many speakers to add to my old setup?

You don't need to add anything, except the receiver. Most Blu-Ray and HD DVD's (like 98%) are 5.1 only. If you want, you can add 1 or two rear surrounds to get 6/7.1, then have the Denon matrix the rear channels into the mix, but they are not necessary and not even recommended unless you have the room space.

As to the second question, it is good to timbre match the speakers by selecting from the same menufacturer/model, but it is not as important for surrounds as it is for the fronts/center.
