While not a huge fan, some of his hits were incredible. Here's a link to the story: http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/n...erg-obit_N.htm

Really sad news. I know his name is kind of a punchline, along with other soft rock artists such as Bread and Seals and Crofts, but I love them all and Dan especially. His bluegrass album, High Country Snows, is worth seeking out. He'll be missed.

Dan's obituary, along with Youtube clips of "The Leader Of The Band" and "Same Old Lang Syne" are posted on AOL...

Re: Singer/songwriter Dan Fogelberg passes away at 56

Living in Champaign-Urbana, IL, I have been a huge fan since his first album came out in 1974. I knew he had cancer, but didn't realize it had advanced so much. A very sad day for me. For those of you that are not as familiar with his work, I highly recommend some of his earlier work like, Home Free, Souvenirs, Captured Angel, Innocent Age, and espacially, Nether Lands.

Re: Singer/songwriter Dan Fogelberg passes away at 56

Very sad news indeed. I've been a fan since the mid-70s.

I really hate when I hear folks ragging on his music. Sure, it's not to everyone's taste, but the dude was SUPREMELY talented, as a musician (I believe he played all the instruments on "Netherlands") and as a songwriter.

My favorite album of his is the 2-disc "The Innocent Age", from whence sprang "The Leader Of The Band" and "Same Old Lang Syne". It's the rare double-album with nary a weak cut. A pop masterpiece, IMO.

R.I.P., Dan.

Listening to "Same Old Lang Syne" isn't going to be the same after hearing this sad news.

I don't know why people who make "soft rock" or "adult contemporary" or whatever the genre's called these days get so much grief... I've always been a huge John Denver fan, so I know the story. A lot of those artists are more talented musicians than those who make hard rock and only know 3 chords.

Re: Singer/songwriter Dan Fogelberg passes away at 56

I kind of introduced that line of thinking into the thread, but I have to say--at the forums at which I've seen Dan's death discussed, nobody is bashing soft rock. I was a little pleasantly surprised by that. I listen to anything from metal to country, but MOR rock is one of my favorite genres. Anyone who doesn't like England Dan or Peoria Dan is missing out.

Re: Singer/songwriter Dan Fogelberg passes away at 56

It stands for "middle of the road" and is mainly used as a classification by radio stations.
