Home theater system for $500?

Looking for a home theater system for a gift for someone and I am not sure what to get. Budget is $500.

The rear speakers really need to be wireless. What receiver? Floor speakers for the fronts would be good. Then a center and a sub?

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!

Re: Home theater system for $500?

here's the deal... it's not that people who post here are such snobs that we won't comment on such things, it's just that most of us (i'm assuming, no actual polls taken) don't or haven't listened to them so we can't give real world advice on these things.

they are not all total pieces of crap but there are some real disadvantages to them. they would include:
difficult or impossible to upgrade.
if something breaks the whole system is effectively useless.
poor sound quality (relative to even moderately more expensive systems put together by components.) specifically, high distortion (see anything over 1%THD in specs), poor or missing low end, subs that play too high (you hear where they are in the room), sat's and subs that do not meet/ overlap/ blend properly causing upper bass or mid problems.
built like most consumer level electronics - to last for the warranty period +3 to 30 days

there are some very obvious up-sides as well.
value
latest features and connectivity
sounds better than your tv's speakers
could even sound good in a smaller room
takes up less space than a typical HT system
fewer boxes, wires and remotes (maybe)
poor build quality means the perfect excuse to buy a new one often
low price

now i can't tell you how one HTIB will sound compared to another. what i can say is that like most things, if a deal is too good to be true it probably is.

good luck

Re: Home theater system for $500?

I don't think you can do wireless on a $500 budget. However, my living room system just about makes the cut as long as you're not looking for HDMI switching/processing.

The Pioneer 516 purchased for $100 on a BF deal from Best Buy combined with three pairs of Polk R150s for $50/pair. Gives you the receiver and 6.0 for $250/$350 depending on how well you do on the receiver. I ran the Polks for a number of months without a sub, mostly for TV viewing and background music (have a dedicated HT room as well). Even in my 22x20x9 living room with 17' to the mains, they got the point across. Would a sub help? Sure, but your budget calls for sacrifices. The Parts-Express Sub-120 at $140 delivered (free shipping promo) would still fit in your budget...haven't heard it, but receives good reviews on all the HT forums.

No first hand knowledge, but just from looking at the specs of the HTSR600, I would expect my suggested Pioneer/Polk/PE package to offer a significant improvement due to the speaker/sub quality...which you should expect with a $200 difference based on the Vann's pricing for the Onkyo set.
