Kevin

You should box it up and sell it to me

It will do a great job at upconverting for you.

I have the PS3 and the HD-A1, my opinion is that the PS3 is much better for DVD, much faster load times and remote response with equal picture quality. I don't own the HD-A2 but from what I have read, it is similar to the HD-A1. Is it possible, you need new PS3 firmware or to calibrate your display? The HD-A2 picture quality should be fine and if you don't mind the clunky operational aspects would be great to use for DVD.

You do realize you could rent HD-DVD titles to watch on the A2 while you wait for the format to "go away".

The only way likely would be Netflix or Blockbuster Online, there are sure no local stores near me that would make that worthwhile.

I'm sure you have your reasons for not joining one or the other, but let me witness for a second.

I was a late adopter of Netflix, myself. After getting tired of the local BlockBusters being out of stuff or getting damaged discs every few rentals, I finally joined Netflix. Put simply, I could've saved myself years of annoyance. Not even including time/gas/etc. savings, renting locally via BB was break even at 4-5 movies per month using the 2-out plan. Even here in coastal NC, turnaround is fast enough that with 2-out, I could watch a movie a night, mailing it back the next morning and never be without an unwatched movie...except maybe Sunday...if we could actually maintain that steady of a diet.

All good points and it is no wonder that Netflix has just about killed the local rental store. I am a subscriber to Blockbuster online for Blu-ray rentals and a few HD DVD rentals. I do still stop at a local Blockbuster or Movie Gallery to rent or purchase used DVD's. My queue for the online plan means I am less likely to actually receive what I want at any given time. I hope the local video store can survive, but I don't know if it will.

I share your desire to support local vendors, but our society's economic expectations make that increasingly difficult. The last time I checked, even BlockB's pricing seemed to encourage customers to go the online route. The public just won't accept the pricing needed to keep that high rent strip mall store stocked and staffed. Many things should cost more than they do, IMO, but the buying public at large has voted for quantity over quality...somebody take away my soapbox, please.

I worked at a mom-n-pop rental store in college that's no longer in business...the only place I ever saw that rented Laserdiscs and we were early adopters of DVD rental. Remember how long it took Blockhead to think DVD would be viable? The owners were movie lovers first, but simply couldn't compete with the wholesale buying power of Blockbuster. We even purchased letterbox VHS formats when available, but Joe Sixpack kept bringing them back and calling them defective.

Oh man, I remember good ol Joe saying "This movie is cut off." "No" I reply "you're actually seeing the whole movie, see movie screens are long rectangles and your tv is square." "But it cuts the movie off." "You're seeing more of the film." "But it cuts the movie off." And then I went to college.

Re: Should I use my Toshiba HD-A2 for JUST the upconverting?

But it cuts the movie off... LMAO. No, actually when it fills your square screen, the movie is being cut off...(or digitally panned which is even worse in my book). Classic.

You bought the player but don't want to own any movies on it? Not sure if I follow that line of thinking. I am a Blu-ray supporter too, but that won't stop me from picking up a few "red" movies also. As an upscaling player though, the A2 is pretty good, so for the price I don't see why not.

Re: Should I use my Toshiba HD-A2 for JUST the upconverting?

ps3 can doing upscaling when you use HDMI cables.
not components.
I use my ps3 for standard dvds and bluray titles. my HDa2 is collecting dust..
I am still keeping it..
