I went out late Sunday to buy some toilet paper from the 7-11 on the corner of the next block — and my guts were gurgling ominously, or I wouldn't have left. When I was walking back to my building, I saw my landlord helping some guys chip their vehicle out from the curb. I noticed that the glazed snow was high enough to go right from the top edge of one vehicle's hood to near the top of the truck on the next vehicle. The few expections were vehicle-sized gaps filled with various pieces of battered plastic outdoor furniture, seemingly reserved for the express use of holding parking spots.

Welcome to Boston!! The old lawn furniture parking spot holder is a fixture in Southie, Dorchester, Charlestown, etc. Be careful, because people have been shot for moving that chair and stealing the spot. It is considered the lowest of low in neighborhood etiquette. Just another quirk about living in the Olde Towne.

Hehe, seems like 'Da Mayah' isn't too happy about the parking space savers I spoke of:

Parking-crazed Hub denizens are flagrantly thumbing their noses at Mayor Thomas M. Menino, openly defying his mandate against saving spots with barrels, cones, and chairs, even though the snow has melted and a two-day grace period has long passed

Typical Boston. Neighborhood etiquette always takes precedent over governmental regulations, which is sometimes good and sometimes bad, depending on the severity of the actions.
