This 1944 title is long OVERDUE! This situation is one reason I keep my LD Player around.

This is the biggest reason I miss my LD player.

Re: "The Uninvited" :( Will we EVER see this on DVD?!?

After all these years, you'd think ... well, who knows? If this classic film isn't here yet, one has to wonder.

Re: "The Uninvited" :( Will we EVER see this on DVD?!?

I don't understand how one of the best "ghost" films ever made is not on DVD after more than ten years of this video format. It boggles my mind that Universal or any of the studios would release much lesser films, but ignore one of the best films of a particular genre.

I heartily agree Crawdaddy! It is impossible to fathom the thinking processes of the persons responsible for keeping "The Uninvited" away from a DVD release.

David_D, you should have kept your LD player.

Re: "The Uninvited" :( Will we EVER see this on DVD?!?

Robert, isn't this one a Paramount property and not owned by Universal... or were you just citing the studio as an example of one who releases lesser genre films?

Eitherway, I'm in full agreement! It's a crime that The Uninvited hasn't been released yet but than you have to remember that we're talking about Paramount here... I wonder if Criterion could ever license this one out?

Re: "The Uninvited" :( Will we EVER see this on DVD?!?

Let's hope it comes SOON...it's unimaginable that this, along with MIDNIGHT, ISLAND OF LOST SOULS, SHE DONE HIM WRONG, and so many others still haven't seen a release (in R1, anyway) after so long.

Marco - yes, definitely owned by Universal, along with most other sound Paramount films through 1948.

Re: "The Uninvited" :( Will we EVER see this on DVD?!?

Thanks Danny, I didn't realize they had ownership of the pre-'48 Paramount library. For a studio that built it's name and reputation on horror films in the thirties they really haven't been treating their properties with much respect. I've suggested this in another thread but I'd absolutely LOVE to see something similar to the Ford At Fox set for ALL of Universal's horror-monster-creature-thrillers through the fifties. An enormous oversized box with DVD sleeves and lots of original poster and promo art, photos, prod. stills, etc. Everything from the major productions to the dozens of sequels, films like this one and even the '50s b-grade stuff and so on..

Re: "The Uninvited" :( Will we EVER see this on DVD?!?

Another vote for this film to be released to DVD. It's one the most genuinely "scary" films ever made and features some great acting. Universal has released a ton of their '40s films in franchise collections, etc. but why they've overlooked this is beyond me.

I've been waiting for this one since '98. I hope if it comes out, Uni gives it a wide release instead of the Best Buy-exclusive Shrinking Man that I missed out on.

Re: "The Uninvited" :( Will we EVER see this on DVD?!?

I share your pain, guys. This is one of my most eagerly awaited DVDs, along with Far from the Madding Crowd.

If "The Uninvited" ever comes on TCM or the like again, I'm just going to copy it to DVD and have done with it.

Re: "The Uninvited" :( Will we EVER see this on DVD?!?

Count me in on this...unbelievable that this hasn't been released yet. There's still so many major movies that haven't been released yet in R1... I'm also still waiting for The Gunfighter & Island of Lost Souls among many others... here's hoping for a great 2008!

Done it already. I'll happily retire it, however, if (I mean WHEN) it gets a proper release.

Knowing Universal, "if" is the more operative word!

Re: "The Uninvited" :( Will we EVER see this on DVD?!?

I agree the absence of THE UNINVITED on DVD is a major oversight, but I must also add that, while for many years Universal was practically MIA regarding classic releases, they have picked up the pace during the past two, and it would not surprise me to see this and several of our other major wish list titles come up. THE HEIRESS wasn't even released as part of a franchise set, so have faith - it will come. (Dear Universal - now that I have publicly supported you, please add to the list of films you need to release ASAP the wonderful Billy Wilder film, FIVE GRAVES TO CAIRO. Many thanks, and have a pleasant holiday!)

Re: "The Uninvited" :( Will we EVER see this on DVD?!?

An inside source has revealed that ISLAND OF LOST SOULS needs extensive restoration before it can be released on DVD. The negatives are gone, and the only vintage element is a damaged 35mm fine grain.

The same problem may apply to THE UNINVITED. The Paramount material that Universal acquired in the 1950's was generally in rough shape.

Any word of a restoration in the works or planned? That's really too bad.

Thankfully, yes. I think Universal has done some improvements in regards to their classic releases and I have no problem publicly supporting them at this stage. I just hope the trend continues...

Re: "The Uninvited" :( Will we EVER see this on DVD?!?

If "Island of Lost Souls" needs major restoration work, then from my POV I would guess that we will never see it on DVD. I can't see Universal dropping a major $$$$$$$$ bundle on fixing a film such as "Island of Lost Souls". I'm figuring they can't see getting any $$$$$$ back on the deal.

ON the other hand there is apparently no hard info that I've read that says "The Uninvited" is in need of a lot of major restoration work. Plus IMHO it is a much more marketable title. The cable DVR recording I have looks decent. And, of course, I'll keep my LD until such time as I have a DVD version in my hands.

They can always license it out to Criterion.

Re: "The Uninvited" :( Will we EVER see this on DVD?!?

Does it do any earthly good to vote for movies we want on the TCM site?

The Uninvited (1944) Overview

There are so many votes for The Uninvited already. Still no hint of a DVD--do any of the studios look at those requests?

It's funny you should ask this, as yesterday the daily IMDB poll was Voting for the Top 20 films not on DVD as per the TCM list. The UNEXPECTED was among them. The AFRICAN QUEEN won hands down the last time I checked, followed by NOTORIOUS and REBECCA (silly to include them since they ARE being released this fall, but anyway...)

I just hope a LOT of insiders saw the poll!

EDIT: Looks like REBECCA and NOTORIOUS have just been removed from the TCM Top Wanted list. They also finally removed ANNE OF THE THOUSAND DAYS which has been on DVD for quite a while now and was still in their Not-on-DVD list yesterday...

Anybody with any further news about when "The Uninvited" might see the light of day on DVD?

Re: "The Uninvited" :( Will we EVER see this on DVD?!?

Shame about this and Island of Lost Souls being overlooked/negleted by Uni.

Licensing these out may be our only hope. I would easily spring for Criterion versions of these. or how about Legend? they did a decent job with the Paramount titles.

Re: "The Uninvited" :( Will we EVER see this on DVD?!?

Obviously more stupidity on the part Universal. Where's "Kitty"? Where's "Million Dollar Legs"? Where's "If I Had A Million"? Where's hundred of great Paramount films that Universal doesn't think are worthy of release????

Re: "The Uninvited" :( Will we EVER see this on DVD?!?

Universal seems to be the studio that has the least interest in releasing the titles that fans are clamoring for. I could be wrong, but I don't think that they've released a single noir title since the 2-disc "Double Indemnity" set more than 2 years ago. Every other studio is pushing out anything that even resembles or sounds like a noir, while Universal continues to sit on some biggies.

Unreleased Universal:
The Uninvited
The Raven (My favorite Karloff & Lugosi film)
Island of Lost Souls (Lugosi & Laughton)
A Foreign Affair (Billy Wilder)
Five Graves to Cairo (Billy Wilder)
Hold Back the Dawn (Billy Wilder Script)
Arise My Love (Billy Wilder Script)
The Glass Key (Veronica Lake Noir)
The Blue Dahlia (Veronica Lake Noir)

People have been requesting these titles since the format was launched and to the best of my knowledge not a one of these has ever been rumored as being worked on.

Re: "The Uninvited" :( Will we EVER see this on DVD?!?

Eric - THE RAVEN has been out for awhile now, as part of the "Bela Lugosi Collection". Just checked and it's still available from Amazon at $20.99.

Many of the others, as you probably know, can be had in R2 versions. I don't notice the sound speedup so it doesn't bother me, although I'm aware that others don't feel the same. Anyway, I agree that they should be released in good R1 versions, especially UNINVITED, ISLAND OF LOST SOULS, and MURDERS IN THE ZOO, none of which are out in any region.

Re: "The Uninvited" :( Will we EVER see this on DVD?!?

PHANTOM LADY and MINISTRY OF FEAR are two more noirs that haven't seen the light of day on R1. There are dozens of other major films that Universal has failed to release. The ironic thing is that U. shelled out for 35mm restorations of many of these films, but hasn't deemed them worthy of DVD. I guess many of their earlier classic releases sold really poorly, but I always thought that film noir was a sure thing.

Well it has been more than 4 months since the last activity. Any word about "The Uninvited" however faint & distant?!??

Re: "The Uninvited" :( Will we EVER see this on DVD?!?

An HTF'er burned me a DVD-r of his laserdisc of The Uninvited. I had not seen it for years (it's a favorite of my wife's), and I expected it to be corny and outdated. It's really quite good and mysterious, one of the classic ghost story movies. Unbelievable that it has never made it to DVD.
