Re: *** Official ATONEMENT Discussion Thread

The problem for me was that I didn't have enough of an investment into the young man to enjoy following him around. So despite that stunning segment at the beach, the war stuff dragged a LOT. The film is at it's best when either sister is on the screen. And I didn't have nearly enough of the young one.

To Chuck Mayer (from the review thread): You need to netflix Pride and Prejudice ASAP. Do not let this movie deter you, P&P is far far better. It is a gorgeous, stunning piece of work.

Re: *** Official ATONEMENT Discussion Thread

The only time I felt engaged emotionally was when Vanessa Redgrave was onscreen. I did like a lot of the camera choices and angles throughout. Technically, it was well put together.

My wife and I went to go see this. Both of us came out of the movie "not really feeling it". It was sad and there were some great scenes but nothing to put this movie over the top as a "years best".

I saw this yesterday and didn't "feel" it either. It's a good movie and it's sad, but it didn't really connect with me too greatly.

Re: *** Official ATONEMENT Discussion Thread

My wife and I saw this last night. She is a huge fan of Pride & Prejudice, so she had some expectations going in. Neither of us left feeling the movie was all that great. It was well-made and well-acted, but there was a detachement I could not overcome pretty much from the very beginning of the film.

My wife and I felt the same. It never fully connected for us.

Anyone know what the point of the beach scene in France was for? Horses getting shot. Ferris Wheel with a man dangling from a seat in the background? Car radiators being whacked with a rifle's butt? It didn't seem to matter to the story, but a good deal of time was spent there.

Likewise, the scene with the French man with the head wound talking with Briney (?) in the hospital. We couldn't figure out what plot purpose this had.

Re: *** Official ATONEMENT Discussion Thread

Personally, I liked the film - found the wartime scenes to be overblown and melodramatic, but of course, it turns out that was the point.

What I found really interesting was, after seeing the film, reading this article on the AV Club website comparing the book with the film. Both the film and the book are clearly about the idea of misinterpretation of another person's actions, and it wasn't until I read the article that I learned that I had myself misinterpreted Briony's pivotal actons. I thought that she had been jealous of her sister and upset with Robbie after discovering the two of them together, and that her accusation was a deliberate lie made out of anger. But apparently, in the book it is clearly stated that she believes Robbie is attacking her sister in the library, and when she states that it was Robbie, she actually believes she is telling the truth. Which is interesting.

Also interesting - the writer of that article seems to believe that the incident between Paul and Lola really was a rape, where I thought, at least from the movie, that it was consensual sex (albeit with an underage girl, so statutory rape, but certainly not forced intercourse). I thought this was why she never corrected Briony's accusation (having been caught having sex, better to go with the "I was raped" story than admit to what she had actually done. This then was borne out in the wedding - if it was rape, why would she marry the guy? And why did she have such trouble looking Briony n the face).

In any case, I really liked the film, and reading that article really made it clear that, while the film is as close to the book as you could realistically film, the two really are wildly different. Which interests me. I might have to seek out the book.

Re: *** Official ATONEMENT Discussion Thread

Just caught this on DVD and had much the same reaction as many here. Huge disappointment, based on the critical hype. The film didn't engage me emotionally at all.

Almost bought this blind. Glad I decided on a $1 Redbox rental instead. I picked up the book but haven't read it yet. I'll have to see if that's any more engaging.

Exactly how I felt. The scene on the beach with no cuts was technically impressive but that was it - it didn't add anything to the story.

I will admit that the last five minutes or so were extremely effective and almost redeemed the movie...almost.

I gave it 3 out of 5 at Netflix.

OMG, the girl with the unpronouncable name (Saorse Ronan) was BRILLIANT. I didn't think it was possible to get this kind of acting out of a kid on her 1st movie but there you go. My 1st impression of her (shame on me): what an ugly kid. 5 mins into the movie and you're watching her open-mouthed though.
