Upconversion work through YPrPb cables?

"My father-in-law has a DLP HDTV that is about 4 years old. It doesn't have an HDMI connection, just YPrPb. I am considering getting him a progessive scan, upconverting DVD player for Christmas. The player that I am looking at has both HDMI and YPrPb connections. However, I am looking for a definitive answer on whether the scaling/upconverting technology of the DVD player will work through the YPrPb component connections. Basically, if the technology will only work via HDMI, then it would be a waste of my money. But if the technology would work through the YPrPb component connection (even if it were at a reduced quality compared to HDMI), then I think it would be a nice gift.

Please advise."

If you use an Oppo upconverting player, it will work. I do not know how many other players support upconversion via component.

HD and BR players don't allow it. You'll have to use a player like the Oppo listed above by Clinton.

Let's be accurate here. HD players will not upconvert copy-protected media through component, but if a disc is not copy-protected, it will do the scaling.

Right.. so that counts out all prerecorded dvds.

Re: Upconversion work through YPrPb cables?

Also the DLP set is already scaling all inputs up to its native resolution, so it comes down to which deinterlacer/scaler does a better job - the one in the player or the one in the TV. (I can't see any difference between my Sony player's upconversion and my JVC TV's scaler, so I use component because my a/v receiver supports component switching but not HDMI.)
