Murder She Wrote: Any Recommendations

I'm thinking about picking up the DVD series and was wondering if anyone has had any problems with the first few seasons. By this, I mean skipping problems with the double sided DVD's.

Re: Murder She Wrote: Any Recommendations

I had issues with Season 1...one episode "My Johnny Lies Over the Ocean" was completely unplayable and several episodes skipped and froze up. Seasons 2 and 3 (the only other double-sided seasons) played much better with no issues. Season 1 is also (in my opinion) the weakest season, so you may just want to start with the single-sided discs at Season 4.

And beware of Season Six. Half of the episodes are Jessica-less episodes as Lansbury took time off from the grueling filming schedule. Those episodes are never as fun or as well put together as episodes featuring the sleuth.

Season Seven (which I'm now watching) contains a few Jessica-less episodes, but far fewer than Season Six.

Good point, Matt! A lot of those non-Jessica Fletcher episodes in Season 6 seem like half-baked spinoff attempts.

For my money, Season 5 of Murder, She Wrote is the best season currently available on DVD. I haven't checked out Season 7 yet, though.

Re: Murder She Wrote: Any Recommendations

I actually broke down and purchased Seasons 1-3 from Columbia House and have watched through Season 1 and I'm halfway through Season 2. I have to say that msot of the episodes don't take place in Cabot Cove, that she's always almost in some other state ... at any rate, I've noticed that over 1/3 of the episodes seem less than interesting ...

Mark,

I had trouble with freezing discs for both the first and second seasons. I brought the first season back, and the copy I now have plays fine. With the second season, I replaced it as well, and the second copy froze. After this, I swapped it for another (non-Murder: She Wrote) title and haven't purchased any more boxed sets. It's shame, since I really like the series.

Are there any plans to release the entire series on single-sided DVDs? I haven't been able to find any threads on this, but maybe someone here has some information on the possibility? Thanks. smile.gif

Hi, Scott--

It's a nice thought, but at this stage I doubt it. Universal has not been very active about that kind of re-release, and since MSW is one of the few shows they found profitable enough to finish without licensing out, there probably won't be a new reason to redo them. For what it's worth, I dislike "flippers" too, but have had much better luck playing them in newer players.

Lee,

Thanks. I've had trouble with some discs from season two. I've given up on returning them repeatedly, as the replacements have also been defective. Anyway, I hope that one day the series will be released 'correctly' in its entirety. Here's to hoping it is! smile.gif
