Good 5.1 Speakers

Hi I'm looking to put together a 5.1 speaker system for around under $900 in all. The room they're going to be in is approximately 15ft x 12ft. Any suggestions? (brands or specific models). Thanks.

By the way it can be separate speakers or a 5.1 speaker set (no HTIB though since I heard those are crappy).

You can get the SVS SBS-01 5.1 package with the PB-10 sub for $1K and it will do very well in a room that size. www.svsound.com

option 1- $780 + shipping and handling, 5 psb alpha c's and monitor audio asw 100 sub from saturdayaudio.com. this will sound better than just about anything you can find for the $$. the downsides are that the speakers all being centers are relatively large and the sub, while amazingly good in terms of output and sound quality for its size, is very small meaning it just can't make really big booms in larger rooms. (but should be ok in your room.)

option 2 - monitor audio bronze series from saturdayaudio.com - various configurations starting at $880 with asw 100 sub. $960 for my choice configuration center, b2's front, b1's or bfx rears + sub. these are about the warmest sounding new speakers i've heard in this price range. they also do loud well. the only real downside IMO is if you don't care for the specific sound.

option 3 - athena from audioadvisor.com. 4 as b1.2's + as c1.2 + as p4100 sub - $500. again tough to beat for the $$. weaknesses - not the best center channel speaker and that's the heart of your movie sound, decent amouts of bass but not the quality or deeper low end you might like. again, these are relatively small compromises at this price for 5 speakers and a sub.

for options 1-3 switching to an svs pb10 sub would be a good upgrade. also check out hsu and outlaw subs for decent good value.

The Magnepan MMG-W and MMG-C for $897 delivered is an option. However, you will need a sub.

The aforementioned SVS combo is a good deal.

You can call AV123.com at 877-543-7500 and see what they can do for you. Santa Schifter has some pretty good deals going on now (check their forums).

The nOrh 4.0 video system is a good option though does not include a sub and the looks are extremely subjective. www.norh.com

Don't rule out preowned speakers and subs either as there are some excellent deals to be had.

You could also consider picking up the SVS SBS-01 package without a sub and add an alternative sub to bring the overall price down.

I always think pre-owned is the way to go. They're already broken in, you can own a quality speaker that you could not otherwise afford, and if you are patient and bargain hunt, you can always sell them for whatever you paid. You don't have that assurance when you buy new. And speakers hold up well with normal use. Do your research to find what you like (audition in hi-fi shops) and check on audiogon.com and craigslist regularly, if you go this route.

But I did almost buy the Onix Reference 1 bookshelf speakers. The only reason I didn't was they were back-ordered.
