Las Vegas Restaurant recommendations?

Thread Starter
Need some Las Vegas veterans to recommend some restaurants.

I'll be out in Vegas in February, and already have some high-priced
restaurants scoped out such as Emiril's New Orleans Fish House
at MGM and the moderately priced The Steak House (my
favorite) at Circus Circus.

What I am looking for is moderately priced restaurants
that have a nice atmosphere, give you decent portions, and lie
somewhere between ultra-fancy and fast-food/buffet.

I'm looking for a good Chinese and Italian restaurant.

For instance, I could go to the Pearl at the MGM, but it
seems to be very high priced. Need a nice alternative. Same for
an Italian restaurant.

Of course, you can recommend some of your favorites here.

Re: Las Vegas Restaurant recommendations?

Vegas, did someone say VEGAS ?
It's been a couple of years, but you can try http://lasvegas.citysearch.com/profi...estaurant.html
I had the Osso Buco, and it was fantastic. IIRC the meal seemed reasonable as far as price went, but we wound up with a bottle of wine that was a bit expensive.
I've also eaten at Landry's (opposite Palace Station) and had a nice meal.

P.S.
Good tips on local places can be gotten from your croupier. Kill some time at a cheap blackjack or craps table and strike up a conversation with the dealer. Or you can take the boring way out and ask the hotel concierge

Re: Las Vegas Restaurant recommendations?

I'm also very interested in this (especially the Italian, but I like Chinese as well). I won't be there in February, but next week. I don't want to hijack Ron's thread, but I would also like show recommendations for me and the wife (especially if a good deal is to be had).

Re: Las Vegas Restaurant recommendations?

Thanks for the advice thus far.

David, not a problem hijacking my thread. In fact I can help.

Mystere seems to be the most pleasing of the Cirque
shows (and least expensive). I saw Love this Summer
and thought it was...okay. More dancing than Cirque acrobatics.

Phantom is supposed to be good. If you register for
FREE at goldtstar.com you get tickets at half price. Great for
you because they are short-term discounts.

Do me a favor, when you return from Vegas tell us all about it,
where you ate, what you saw, and if GOLDSTAR was worth your
effort because I plan to use them as we get nearer to our trip.

Re: Las Vegas Restaurant recommendations?

John,

This is great! Thank You!

Listen, how is P.F. Changs? Is it decent chinese food?
Nice restaurant?

Re: Las Vegas Restaurant recommendations?

I can comment on P.F. Changs since it is a chain and I have eaten at several of them. They tend to have decent atmosphere and I have never been disappointed by the food. It may not be the best/most authentic, but it has always been pleasant and I never turn it down when someone want to go there. It is my understanding that both P.F. Changs and Pei Wei Asian Diner are owned by the same company. Pei Wei is more causal and smaller restaurants, but I actually like their menu a little better.

Ron, thanks for the tips.

Re: Las Vegas Restaurant recommendations?

For Italian, how about Rao's at Caesar's Palace? I'm sure it's easier then trying to get into the NYC location.

Yeah...PF Changs is GREAT.
I go there a lot.

No matter what location you go to they are always slammed for a lunch crowd and overly slammed for a dinner crowd.
If you plan on going about 5- close, I would call ahead for a reservation.
Especially around 7pm.

I go there just for the schezwan asparagus which is FANTASTIC!
I also go there for the orange chicken.
Hot and sour soup is great especially for the winter months.

Nice restaurant with great variety of food.
Fully stocked bar.
and decent price.

Re: Las Vegas Restaurant recommendations?

I was in Vegas in October, and following the Frommer's guidebook (yes, cliche I know) we went to Lotus of Siam, which according to the book is a really good Thai restaurant. It did not disappoint, and this is coming from my wife who is really into spicy food. The only downside is that it's relatively out of the way, not being near The Strip (meaning the mega casinos on LV Blvd South) -- I can't remember exactly (goes to Google), ah here is its website:-
http://www.saipinchutima.com/

It wasn't very pricey, and the lunch buffet seems to be good value.

Re: Las Vegas Restaurant recommendations?

Tried Goldstar and it gets you a decent deal on Phantom, but I think we are passing. While I love Phantom, the wife is more "eh" about it. Of course, I also got to see it in London in the early nineties and I think that will be kind of hard to top. I do think we are going to give Mystere a try. It'll be a new experience for us.

BTW, can anyone recommend some decent shopping options in Vegas? I don't know if we will have time, but since we will be traveling without our little girl we might want to do a little relaxing shopping (not easy with her in tow). Oh, and nothing extravagant (we aren't in those tax brackets and if we were I would have most likely spent it on new HT gear ).

Re: Las Vegas Restaurant recommendations?

Shopping:
There's an outlet mall by the AIrport.
There's the fashion Mall
There's Caesar's mall which I like
There's also a mall type place by Planet Hollywood.

All of those places should cover the gamut.

There's another outlet mall towards the northern side, just off the freeway. IIRC that one has a somewhat more upmarket selection of shops. And of cousre there's the big one off the freeway just before it enters California about 45 mins out of Vegas, if you are driving to LA (but we didn't visit that one, so I can't tell you anything about it).

Oh, and for shows, apart from the Cirque d'Soleil shows and other really popular ones which don't participate, for show tickets you should try the half-price outlet at Circus Circus (we got our tickets there for the Rat Pack tribute at the Greek Isles), run along the same lines as Leicester Square's booth. It's not something I see advertised anywhere, and we only happened to chance upon it when we went to the arcade at Circus Circus.

If you're a Monty Python fan be sure to check out Spamalot at Wynn Casino!

Re: Las Vegas Restaurant recommendations?

Unfortunately, I will be the dissenting voice on PF Changs. I realize it's more friendly to westerners, but to me, it's not good Chinese food. The menu is limited, the portions are very small for the price. Go to any good Chinatown, such as in LA, SF or NY, you get better food and a lot more food for the same price. Of course, PF Changs has a prettier and more 'hip' interior, but it doesn't make up the difference for me.

I've never tried the Vegas Lawry's, but I very much enjoyed the one in Beverly Hills. If you like Prime Rib, I would recommend it. I think it comes to around 30 dolllars per person, which is not cheap, but maybe a little bit less expensive than the most high class joints in the Bellagio or Venetian. They have a swirling bowl of salad before the prime rib that is very cold, crisp and quintessential American tasting.

Re: Las Vegas Restaurant recommendations?

Avoid the Strip and go up Flamingo to Archi's Thai Kitchen. Best Thai in Vegas, and I've been to all of 'em. It's cheap, and best of all, Thai people eat there, not tourists.

Re: Las Vegas Restaurant recommendations?

If u don't mind average surrounding, but excellent food go to Chinese Cuisine on Decatur and Sahara. Sorry don't know exact address but it's near an indoor swap meet, and next to a Subway. The salted calamari and roast duck is excellent! PF Changs does not compare to this place, and yes I've eaten at both places several times. (I'm asian and don't consider PF as Chinese Food.)

Binions has an excellent steak house on their top floor. You'll have a nice view of vegas. Expect to pay around $150-250 for 2. Service is top notch. Of course I only go there when I have an open comp and our bill is always high, so if I didn't order everything on the menu I could cut my bill in half.

Steak and seafood, you can check out Canal Street at the Orleans. Very nice atmosphere and friendly service to boot.

Final recommendation is Ruths Chris! You can't go wrong at Ruths Chris...which is a steak house btw.

Re: Las Vegas Restaurant recommendations?

Ron, I find P.F.'s to be standard affair but decent. You could try

Tao @ the Venetian (very busy but the food is awesome)

Shibuya @ MGM is Japanese(I go there at least once when I go to LV annually)

If you want to lay down some serious cabbage you should go to Jasmine inside the Bellagio. Totally over-priced and almost worth it.

At New York, New York there is an awesome Jewish deli, forgot the name but it's right by Starbucks.

My all-time favorite though is the Shepherd’s Pie @ Nine Fine Irishmen @ the New York, New York. At night the place is just a great time, great food and overall atmosphere. A fun little place that you can take your entire family to. (call ahead)

I much preferred The Stage Deli at Caesar's Forum Shops. YMMV

Unfortunately I won't be able to give you a recap. An ice storm hit when the wife and I were scheduled to leave and our flight was canceled. We weren't able to get another one for both of us that would still have made the trip worthwhile. They only had one seat available the next day and my wife had to take it so that she could make her conference. Oh well...

Thanks to all for the advice. Hopefully I will get a chance to use it in the future.
