I've been really enjoying the tribute to Roz Russell so far and it would be great if Warner released more of her films, as they actually own enough to make a set and she's well known enough to actually sell.

Geezzz... I just spend a wad on those $3 MGM and SONY specials at Big Lots for my birthday (which is 7/29) and now have to consider this too...

Irv over at Movies Unlimited claims that the Natalie Wood Collection as been pushed back to the 1st quarter of 2009.

I've also been thinking about something else.......

We are probably taking it for granted that Warner will be celebrating the MGM 85th in the same manner in which they celebrated the WB anniversary. Perhaps they WON'T, since MGM is actually still around as a studio and it might make for an awkward situation. They haven't made an announcement yet either way, but I would not be surprised if WHV opted to be alittle more low key with their MGM celebration - if there is one at all. They may simply release many of the MGM/RKO titles we've been waiting for without there being any kind of formal celebration for MGM.

Just a thought.

I dont know about anyone else, but this years' releases dont seem to add up to a celebration. Unless they come through with something impressive in November/December, (really hoping a Forbidden Hollywood will show up) I will be a little disappointed.

I just read the companion book by Richard Schickel, and there are some glaring errors (I didn't know Bette Davis won a third Oscar for All About Eve!), and some persons/films weren't given enough attention (more on Hal Wallis, Michael Curtiz, and Bette Davis' and Olivia DeHavilland's lawsuits against Jack Warner, and why so little on What Ever Happened To Baby Jane?, Kings Row and the 1954 and 1976 versions of A Star Is Born?). On the other hand, the pictures are nice.

WHV appears to be in a Bogart cliche rut as there already is a Warner Bros Studio documentary HERE'S LOOKING AT YOU, WARNER BROS.

I saw the book at Borders and looked through it. Nice pictures but agree that it appears some actors/films were glossed over. For kicks I looked up who was arguably Warners' most notorious male pre-code star in the index: Warren William. He gets a once sentence mention in the entire book and it was basically a footnote that he appeared in "The Mouthpiece".

I don't expect a whole chapter on him, but he was a big part of their early history and we've already had books upon books written about Bogart, Cagney Casablanca et al. How about digging a little deeper and giving us a wider perspective of Warner history? To me, the huge appeal that classic Warner films have is the great stable of character actors they had.

To be clear, I'm not condemning Mr. Schickel's book. I'm sure that reading it from cover to cover would be a very enlightening experience and I fully realize that, for commercial reasons, it has to appeal to the widest audience possible. Film history buffs are probably better served elsewhere.

ICAM! Also, I would've loved to see pieces on Jack Carson and Claude Rains. How could Schickel write about the Warner 'glory years' and not make special mention of cameramen Ernest Haller, James Wong Howe and Sol Polito, not to mention scenic genius Anton Grot and the costumes of Orry-Kelly!

I was expected a flurry of new classic catalog films for the end of the year to celebrate "85 Years".....nope WB is quiet. It does not bode well for their 86th.. Is WB going the way of Paramount? very sad.

Yes, it's Warner's 85th Anniversary this year and yes, we all thought that they would celebrate it a bit bigger with more catalog titles for everyone but it was nevertheless a good year:
We got two Gangsters Collection, Forbidden Hollywood Vol. 2, Bonnie and Clyde SE and UCE, Joan Crawford Vol. 2, Bette Davis Vol. 3, the new Dirty Harry Set, the Sinatra DVDs, those Western DVDs (Errol Flynn, Western Box Set, HTWWW) and two Musical Sets. And in November there will be two more collections. We hadn't had any catalog titles in December last year, like now.
To my mind there is no reason for negative visions about Warner ignoring their catalog in the future. Sit back, relax. We have no idea, what's going on behind those walls and yes, they announced some titles, that didn't came out this year but we don't know, whether there were some problems or not and I do believe, we will see some announcements this year for 2009. Until this date will come, I'll buy other stuff from my wishlist, because there are still plenty of movies missing in my collection, that are already available.

Actually I can think of 3: Classic Musicals 3, Busby Berkeley 2 & the upcoming Homefront collection. And that's not even counting the Sinatra sets. Loving musicals as much I do, I think we have been really blessed this year.

Has anybody heard plans for releasing "You Must Remember This: The Warner Brothers Story" on DVD?

I've watched about 30 minutes of this the last few nights in between running errands. I have it on Tivo, but if a DVD is imminent I may wait to watch it.

Of the bit that I watched, I was amazed at the number of movies featured that are not currently on DVD. Hopefully this means good things for those particular films.
