I haven't seen so many double dips outside of a Baskin Robbins. A couple are genuine upgrades, but the rest look like nothing but fancy new packaging.

I can’t wait to get my hands on the Casablanca Collector’s Edition, my prayers have been answered!

Which seems to be a three-disc set.

Yeah I agree. Having said that, these would make great gifts if you know someone who likes the film.

I think the next time I buy Casablanca will be the Blu-ray.

Which is exactly what Warner should be doing with those titles.

Agreed. Real good news for the 'piled higher and deeper' fans.

Re: Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

Never thought I'd say this but I'll definitely be double-dipping on Casablanca for all those extras... it looks like Warners have thrown in books of production photos and tons of publicity stills and all kinds of cool looking vintage marketing reproductions. I'm almost certain I'll go for this!

The others (apart from a couple of the TV series) do not interest.

Rather than double-dipping for "books of production photos" why not just buy a book?

Such as:

Amazon.com: Casablanca: Script and Legend: The 50th Anniversary Edition: Howard Koch: Books

Re: Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

Agree that a Casablanca reissue only makes sense for the Blu Ray release. WHV mocked other studios for double dips not too long ago and said something to the effect that they wouldn't be issuing "Casablanca - the letters of transit edition".

For SD owners, the current set supplemented by the book Rich mentioned should suffice.

Re: Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

I have to wonder the reasoning behind these -- if the DVD market is suffering from the bad economy, how many people are going to spring for DVDs they probably already own (is there anyone who wants to see 300 who hasn't already bought it?) in fancy packaging and a higher price.

This is awesome news! Most of the films really are not my favorites but I will defiantly get It's a Great Feeling, and April in Paris! Doris Day almost has all her films on DVD.

Sorry Kelly, but I think that you misread the post. The listing was those NOT on DVD (nor scheduled for release).

Agreed, but never underestimate the lack of creativity in any Marketing Dept.

Wrong, those are supposed to be released in the next Doris Day Wb boxset in 2009. See reference in my original posting.
It's a Great Feeling is one of my very favorite Doris Day films and all those incredible cameos by Warner stars!!!

'cause I bet the DVD set will cost the same price and come with neat physical extras and probably a higher bitrate and slightly improved transfer than the last time around. Now I don't plan to do this for every title and I don't agree with WHV double-dipping on already definitive releases... but with a film like Casablanca which I bought years ago and a package of such quality that's done with class, I will go for it. I think it's pretty neat. Fanboy briefcase packages and monster head junk I can do without! But I think this set looks really cool and I bet we'll see some new and significant supplements as well over the previous release. Make no mistake though... I ain't selling that one off until this is in my player and I can see it for myself.

I'll repeat. Those films (from Corey's post) have not been released nor have they been scheduled for release.

That you or some Doris Day tribute site are optimistic about 2009 ... is nice.

Did I just read the word "bet"?

If you want to bet that the forthcoming SD Casablanca gift set will cost the same price (or lower) than the book I posted (both new through U.S. Amazon, even the SD pre-release price) ... I'll take that bet. Say 100 dollars U.S. paid through Paypal? Is it a bet?

Btw, what's wrong with the transfer from the last release?

Re: Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

I have four different Region 1/A releases of "Casablanca" in my collection including the HD DVD release. If it's release on BRD, having it with all those extras listed in this release will probably tempt me to buy it for the fifth time.

Interesting. What extras are listed?

Re: Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

I may be tempted to pick up Casablanca on Blu-ray but I'll probably wait since I don't own a player yet.

I love the movie enough that I could even go for the fancy box set if there's a Blu-ray release of that. I won't pick it up if it's SD only though as I already own the SE and don't see the point. After all, I love the movie, not the trinkets.

Re: Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

Unless there's actually extra content on the Casablanca BD release worth having, then I'm sticking with the already excellent HD-DVD release which is already quite content heavy.

That is what I am planning in the abstract, but when it comes down to it I may not be able to resist. I'm a sucker for nice packaging and the early photos are promising.

You know what would make great Christmas gifts? A nice Jean Harlow set partnered with Clark Gable Volume 2.

Indeed!

A Lana Turner set would be great as well. On a similar note.....

The Sonny Starr show which airs on KKNX Solid Gold Radio 84 AM in Eugene, Oregon, had a show which aired on May 25th which was dedicated to Jean Harlow. It's a show dedicated to Hollywood history and has had guests on such as Debbie Reynolds, Jane Russell & Mickey Rooney. The Harlow tribute garnered the HIGHEST ratings of all of the shows they've done, which is amazing since the other stars I mentioned were actually live on the show! Sonny was surprised that Harlow had such a loyal and strong fanbase (just look at all of those youtube tributes).

I just decided to mention this in the hope that a Warner exec is reading this thread. The lack of a Harlow collection from WHV continues to be a source of great disappointment for me and many others.

Re: Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

Can you listen to that radio show over the net. I wouldn't want to miss out on future shows like that.

I wonder when The Secret Six is being released? The Digital bits mentioned it going under restoration back in January 2006.

Re: Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

According to digitial bits Casablanca will be released in SD and Blu-ray at the same time. I won't be buying the SD version but will be picking up the Blu-ray, since I don't have the HD version and don't have a HD player. I wonder what kind of packaging the Blu-ray will come in. Will it be the deluxe packaging or just a standard blu-ray case similar to the multi-disc Blade Runner set?

digital bits write up:

"A Casablanca: Ultimate Collector's Edition box set is also coming to both DVD and Blu-ray Disc. Both will include 40 minutes of special features, 2 feature-length commentaries, branded travel-related premiums, a photo book, and much more."

This also would go with what WB has stated that ALL movies they release as SE will also be released in Blu-ray at the same time so the "if WB releases a Blu-ray version" is not something to even worry about.

The Platinum blog is operated by Lisa Burks who has a link where you can listen or download (courtesy of the Sonny Starr show) the files for the show. Lisa is one of the main torch carriers of Harlow's legacy, and will soon have a book published on Franchot Tone - which she's been working on for several years. Here's the link to the Platinum blog:

I think the Secret Six may likely end up in another Gable collection OR it could end up in a Harlow set along with Beast of the City. However, I truly believe that a Gangster collection would probably be the proper venue for these two films since Harlow/Gable are just supporting characters in both films. I particularly like Beast of the City, and love that exotic dance that Jean does while seducing the cop.

Beast of the City could end up in another Forbidden Hollywood Collection.

Re: Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

What's the status of the John Garfield set? It'd pair pefectly with an Ida Lupino set (maybe under the TCM Archives banner). Both of these actors turned in powerful performances during their tenure at Warners, but they're not as known as well as their contemporaries such as Bette Davis, James Cagney, Joan Crawford, and Bogie.

For anyone interested, DVDPacific.com have Pete Kelly's Blues in stock already (it isn't out until the 22nd). My copy shipped yesterday.

Re: Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

It's probably a lower tier title but after finally going to Gettysburg two weeks back, I'd like to see a 15th Anniversary Edition of the movie...possibly also the extended TV version?
