Add Cool Hand Luke to that one John. Went on DVDPacific and it has vanished. (was hoping that the second Ty Power set was up for pre-order, but I am probably being a bit impatient )

Are all of these titles worth finding ?

Or just wait until they are re released with new special features ?

Wait for the SEs of An American in Paris and How the West Was Won. The new versions should offer much improved quality. Paris is being scanned ultra resolution, and How the West from 65mm, rather than the current version which is from 35mm.

Yes I was going to wait for HTWWW anyway based on what I have heard on this forum

Both are still available at DVDPacific, Ken.

Re: Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

There are a few titles in that OOP list that say 'old version' (including 'High Sierra'); I'm assuming that means a snapper version, and doesn't necessarily mean a shiny new SE on the way?

Could be the case John. The snapper cases are awful. I haven't heard anything about High Society getting a revamp disc.

Re: Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

With this year being its 50th anniversary, it certainly is time for Gigi to finally get the treatment it deserves on DVD. The current DVD was one of the first titles released in the format, with virtually no extras, and has been strangely neglected ever since.

I suspect Louis Jourdan isn't up to participating, but Leslie Caron should certainly be afforded the opportunity to participate in making a DVD release worthy of one of the biggest and best films of her career.

Re: Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

It appears that both An American In Paris and Gigi will be re-issued...they are listed as Blu-Ray versions for September, '08...I assume that SD versions would also be released (at that time?)

...put in wrong link...still looking...sorry...

o.k., if you go to The Digital Bits - Celebrating Film in the Digital Age and scroll down to the 2/7 entry...Gigi and American In Paris are scheduled for Blue-Ray.

...I'm sure that I saw the issue month for both, (somewhere), as 09/08...

I would rather that they scan HTWWW from Cinerama elements, with the notable exception of any insert shots that were derived from Camera 65/Ultra Panavision elements, but that's just me. I'd also love to see Warner Smilebox HTWWW.

I just searched on rec.arts.movies.tech, and it looks like they are using the Cinerama elements, but then using a computer to join the elements as seamlessly as possible. Apparently specialised Hewlett Packard computers are being used to do it:

Re: Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

Maybe it came up earlier in this huge thread but I wonder if The Magnificent Ambersons will make it to DVD in 2008. During the 2007 Warner Chat it was stated that "good elements" had been located for Ambersons and that it would be released sometime in 2008. Some speculate that "good elements" means that the long lost footage has been found, which is unlikely after 66 years.

I thought they said they were still looking for good elements, so they didn't put a date on when it would be released.

Warners is a tad bit disappointing right now. Their schedule has been very bleak and still no news about the Lana Turner and Spencer Tracy sets.

Well, yes, if you don't count the Bette Davis box set, the Joan Crawford box set, the Gangsters box set, the Forbidden Hollywood box set, the upcoming musicals box set and I'm probably forgetting something. But you're right, since they're not putting out a new box set every hour, they are definitely snoozing at the WB...

We all want the classics as fast as possible, and we all wish the companies were putting them out as fast as possible but sometimes one should look at what one has been given (oh, OK, given the opportunity to buy to enrich a company's coffers) along with what one wishes one had.

Re: Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

Whenever Warners is mentioned these days, the discussion takes a distinct turn into deja vu territory doesn't it (not least in the course of this thread)?

FWIW, I'm delighted with their current output; only Fox appears to be keeping pace.

Re: Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

I'm delighted with their current output as well, but not being a Dirty Harry fan fan it seems like once mid-April comes and the aformentioned box sets are purchased and on my DVD shelf ...there seems to be a long wait until new box sets are announced for release. I trust Warners will not let us down though, so I will use that time to watch some of the previous releases. I also have to admit it will be a lot easier on my wallet.

Agreed and well said. But to be fair, this is the Warner 85th Anniversary Celebration thread and all of those box sets you mentioned have nothing to do with that, other than just the continuation of their classic release plan.

Agreed. We seem to be doing 'Two for the Seesaw'.

I think the points have been made and remade. Isn't it time to close this thread?

Well those mentioned sets were announced months ago?? Other than Frank Sinatra, where are the press releases for the sets in June and we should be getting announcements for July as well.

Re: Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

Robert,

First off, Warner does consider the Bette Davis and Gangster boxsets as part of their 85th anniversary promotion as indicated by the packaging of those boxsets. The same applies to Bonnie and Clyde another Warner original production.

Secondly, I don't see the problem with this thread remaining open. If some of you feel that it has become repetitive then stop reading and posting in it, that way, the thread will die a natural death. However, when Warner announces further titles for the second and third quarters it will surely appear again.
