Now if they would just fix season 1 of Mister Ed and Fathers Knows Best, I'd really have no complaints with them.
That would put them back on my good side, too. However, they still need to check their source material more carefully. I still would not preorder from them because you would never know what you might get.
The company in England, Network DVD, which distributes all of the old ITC properties, has been doing this for a while. Shows which have a very limited appeal they make available as exclusives just from their website. Among the shows that they have put out which aired in the U.S. are From a Bird's Eye View (NBC 1970), Shirley's World (ABC 1971), Espionage (NBC 1963), Man of the World (Syndicated 1962) and the just released Whiplash (Syndicated 1960). It would be great of some of the other companies picked up on this and started doing the same thing with their shows. There are so many titles languishing in the vaults which could sell a few thousand copies. Not enough to justify a broad release but certainly enough to make some money if done in this way. I think that what might be happening with Shout though is that they paid to license full runs of these series so they are stuck having paid for them already and now they need to figure out a way to make some of their money back. I seriously doubt that if a show sold poorly for them that they would then go back and spend more on further seasons. They likely paid upfront for the full runs of all of these shows and now they are just trying to recoup as much of their outlay as is possible.
I bought season 3 (and 4) from Australia a long time ago. But it's a nice surprise for those people still only living in an R1 universe.
Funny you should say that I have a mulit region dvd player and did just that, I bought s3 and s4 from MadMan.com from the land down under and are very pleased with the r4 sets (video and audio) captures were superior to Shouts S1 and s2 of Ironside. I'd love to support shouts release of Ironside season 3 but I can not justify the double dip, they'll just have to be happy with me getting Adam 12 S4 in 02/2010 plus there's HGWT , more Canon , JAG, etc...... to get. I'll pickup shouts Ironside if they make to s5 and counting
I've never owned a region-free player (though my computer DVD is region-free) and I'm glad I didn't invest in one since I would much prefer having an R1 release. It was always annoying that the R4 market would be ahead of the US market for an American television classic since I can conversely never recall a foreign show having more releases in the US than its country of origin.

I don't own a region-free player either. I just hacked out the region code on my player which took me a whole 30 seconds.
Hi all,
For those purchasing the Australian sets, Season 5 is tentatively slated for release by Madman Entertainment in May 2010, with subsequent seasons continuing throughout the year.

That's good news but I'm going to wait and see now that Shout has resumed releases. I'm still only on 2nd season in my viewing anyway.

That so grovie dude! I pre release order season 4 from you guys and I got it few days after it was release in Austraila. I'll check your site in april 2010 for pre release order I was very happy ordering from Madman direct website
It was a great way to continue the releases for those who wanted very much to see it continue. Everyone who was on Shout! for not releasing S3 before have no excuses to not order a copy and support further releases this way.
Bumping this thread to first acknowledge how much I've enjoyed the S3 release I got from Shout! direct, and to also give a giant thumbs down to Stuart Galbraith's review on DVD Talk that disses the entire series. He must have been watching a different series from the one I've been enjoying because the idea that there's no camaraderie amongst the principal cast is just absurd. It never seems to occur to him that perhaps the reson why the character of Ironside is less hostile at this point than he was in S1 is *because* he's had two years of episodes now to build up a good releationship with the likes of Ed Brown, Eve Whitfield and Mark Sanger.
I won't diss the shows that Galbraith prefers since that's his perogative but his review is one to be devoutly ignored.
I've been watching a few S5 episodes on my "unofficial" set, and while I think the transition from Barbara Anderson to Elizabeth Baur was done smoothly, just what in the world were they thinking with that revised theme music???? That literally reeks of 70s trendiness at its worst and they even kept it that way all the way to the series finish!
I was never a big Elizabeth Baur fan and didn't really like seeing Barbara Anderson leave. She was so gorgeous, even though they gave her little to do. I'd like to get the remaining 4 seasons but they are not as important to me as the first four were.
Jack, I couldn't disagree with you more regarding the theme. The theme from 71-75 was an edit of a version from Quincy Jones' album Smackwater Jack (a damn fine album too). It's a terrific piece of straight-ahead jazz, and I much prefer it to the earlier version. I also think that the scores for the individual episodes improved over the years with the input of Marty Paich and Oliver Nelson, among others.
I also like the Ironside theme from 1971-1975 the best. I like the original Ironside theme too, but in my opinion the 1971-1975 version is much better ( and that is saying a lot because the original is good!) Quincy Jones newer version is fantastic!
