Weekly RoundUp 12-4-2007 - Page 2

Re: Weekly RoundUp 12-4-2007

I have POTC and Superbad Blu Ray coming from Amazon. I'm gonna hold off on Razor till it hits a Hi Def version. I went 5 seasons getting 24 Box set and I have watched none, I think the nature of the show prohibits me rewatching it, and if I wanted to watch an entire season again I can always Netflix it. I'll start Getting Galactica Seasons in Hi Def with S3, maybe I'll Double Dip the older seasons at some point down the road when I can pick it up cheap.

When BB gave away Fezzik t-shirts with Princess Bride, there were different sizes. I saw the DVD packaged with both L and XL shirts.

You've given me hope! I really want a Superbad t-shirt, how silly is that?

Re: Weekly RoundUp 12-4-2007

Not to be nitpicky, but 12 Angry Men is not a John Ford film. It was directed by Sidney Lumet. Anyway, here's hoping that they do a 16:9 transfer one day. Not that the current dvd is bad, but having a Widescreen tv, it would be nice to get the optimum resolution and best picture quality possible.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 12-4-2007

I have been trying to avoid SD DVD purchases, but I broke down and picked up the 2-disc Serenity SE at Best Buy for $8.99 because of the commentary track (Joss and 4 others from the cast, I think Nate, Adam, Ron and Jewel), and the additional hour of stuff on the 2nd DVD.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 12-4-2007

Just a quick heads-up for the Best Buy PotC:AWE Bonus disc... I went in and immediately found the huge cardboard display chock-full of Pirates. Nothing stood out as any containing a bonus disc. I looked in the new release section. Again, nothing. No extra stickers or anything. I went back to the display and asked the Blue-Shirt. He looked at the display, looked at the sign with the prices, then picked up the 2-disc edition and said "this must be the one with the extra disc." I went back to the New Release aisle and began to search through the discs for one with any indication of a bonus disc. Then I saw it. On the bottom shelf. A row of cardboard disc-sleeves. Pirates Bonus Discs. Each priced with a price sticker for $9.99. (That's why I think I didn't spot them right away.) It did ring up as free when I checked out though.

So make sure that you find the stack of bonus discs, whereever they may be.

Jimmy!

Thanks for the heads-up.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 12-4-2007

Yes, thanks Jimmy! Excellent report!

This is another of those confusing weeks for me as I will be buying two copies: one SD, one BD--both with bonus discs. I've got deposits on both. And, an RZ certificate. Not nearly as confusing as my Ratatouille experience, but I'm still gonna have to be on my toes!

Oh, yeah...and then there's W&G: S7.

Oh...and 24: S6 (which I was kinda on the fence about) with that $10 coupon from the season premiere release.

=======================

BTW, I'd love to hear from anyone who gets to a CC about that deal with 24: Season 6 and whatever...

I picked up my copy today and to make things more confusing, there's no size info on the package or even on the tag of the shirt. I'm tall and I'm about 20 or more pounds overweight so I normally wear an XL and this shirt fits my gut but it's too short on me. Usually a shirt is too short for me when it's a Large.

Long story short, I think the Superbad shirt is a Large.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 12-4-2007

That's a bummer. I picked up 2 of them, but may end up returning one of them (don't think a L is going to fit them...at all).

It's probably the second movie since the BB in my area has a ton of bonus discs for that movie still sitting on shelves too.

I can't find a definitive answer.

Adrian: I saw the BD of Mr. & Mrs. Smith last night. Apparently my guess was completely wrong. The specs only list one film which is rated PG-13 with a running time of 120 minutes. That's the same as the theatrical release.

The extended release clocks in at 125 minutes and is NR.

And that's why you are fortunate enough to have an "itsy-bitsy" collection. And, I mean that.

However, your sig link doesn't seem to be working...

Re: Weekly RoundUp 12-4-2007

Thanks as always Mike & Patrick.

Only 1 definite for me this week: 24: Season 6.

I picked it up today at Best Buy using the $10 coupon from the Season 6 Premiere DVD along with a $5 Rewards certificate.

Quote:
--Best Buy has a FREE BONUS FILM CELL with the purchase of 24: Season 6 on DVD. On-pack.
There is a round, blue and yellow decal on the packaging noting:
Best Buy Exclusive!
Collectible Film Cell Included!
(I was curious about that - Why would there be any "film" of 24 in the first place?)

Here is the front (actual size is just shy of 5" x 7"):

And the back:

Note: There is a serial number on the back that has been blocked out for this image.

The second section / paragraph on the back reads:
Quote:
This limited edition 24 Senitype is produced from a select single Computer Generated
Image (CGI) and includes one frame of corresponding film footage produced from that
image. The 24 image is digitally scanned and expertly reproduced using intricate state-
of-the-art imaging and printing techniques. The film footage is an actual 35-millimeter
film frame reproduced from the original CGI image by master film technicians.
So, to answer my question, I guess that the film cell was made just as a collectible item.

I fixed it (Adrian was using HTML tags, and I converted it to UBB tags).

Re: Weekly RoundUp 12-4-2007

Thanks, Patrick! Not such an "itsy" collection!

=====================================

BTW, I just finally checked @ cc.com and confirmed that "sale" on Seasons 1-5 of 24. Here's how cc.com describes it:

Quote:
24: seasons 1-5 on sale 49.99 each, with purchase of 24 season 6 & any previous season thru Dec 8

I am flabbergasted by this. I believe Best Buy currently has seasons 1-5 on sale for $24.99 apiece...no strings attached.

I would certainly hope NO ONE would ever go to Circuit City this week and buy ANY copies of 24. That has to be one of the worst "deals" I have ever seen a store post. Come to think of it, on cc.com, each of the early seasons of 24 is already listed as $49.99 -- so why feel the need to buy Season 6 in order to get that price? It's all so freaking strange.

I cannot imagine misinterpreting a DVD sale special in a store flyer only because the price is so high. But THAT is exactly what I did when I posted this week's RoundUp.

Circuit City is routinely sky-high on box sets of any kind. Best Buy and Amazon are generally close then CC is generally significantly higher, even on release week. Just another reason to not buy DVD's at CC (along with their horrible display shelving format).

Re: Weekly RoundUp 12-4-2007

The CC near me is VERY close to my BB. I can tell you that--even with all the well-documented problems I've had with BB over the years--I RARELY ever find myself directed to CC for ANYTHING!

But this week's 24 situation is obscene. Their marketing people must be on crack.

What's even funnier about it is that I don't think I ever paid more than $45 for a 24 set on the day it was released (rather than on a decent sale where they run about $30 or less). And I paid $45 when the S2, S3 and maybe S4 sets had an MSRP of $70- prior to being lowered to a $60 MSRP.

I guess they're just relying on suckering people coming in for Christmas to spend $50 a set.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 12-4-2007

Think about it. A new season of a TV show is released. Many times retailers will offer sales on previous season sets that are CHEAPER than the newest season set.

For example: Season 7 of Friends is released on sale for $29.99 (reg. $34.99). Some stores might have Seasons 1 thru 5 or 1 thru 6 on sale for $19.99 or $17.99 apiece.

This week, I purchased 24: Season 6 for $26.99 (incl. $10 coupon) and CC wants to sell me seasons 1-5 for $49.99. They're smokin' crack, I tells ya!

Well...Best Buy is a perfect example. This week: 24: Season 6 is on sale for $36.99. Seasons 1-5 are on sale for $24.99 apiece. Not a bad deal at all.

I guess it was Barnum who said there's a sucker born every minute. They must also shop at CC.
