Toshiba AX2 resetting itself several times during movie: Advice?

My newly acquired Toshiba AX2 is really starting to irritate me.

I watched Transformers on it a few weeks back and
about 30 minutes in, the player stopped with a message that it
was resetting its resolution and then went back to the start of
the disc. This happened over and over for about 5 times until
I could finally get the player to stabilize and play the movie.

Last night I watched Knocked Up and about 60 minutes
into the film the same thing happened. Player stopped, put up a
screen saying it had to reset the resolution and then went through
the same cycle a number of times before I could stabilize the
situation and watch the rest of the film.

Now, mind you, I haven't upgraded the firmware yet. Before
all of you yell at me and point to that as being the problem, I want
to see if it truly is and if anyone else has experienced the same
problems.

Thanks everyone!

Re: Toshiba AX3 resetting itself several times during movie: Advice?

Ron,

This same thing is happening to me on my A2. I even upgraded the firmware to 2.7, but it still resets itself several times during the course of a movie [any movie].

When I called Toshiba, [who's techs aren't that good], all they have me do is to re-initialize the player and re-start it, but the results are the same. Then they just tell me to send it in for repair. I'm not sending it in now because it takes forever and I want the player for the holidays.

If anyone else has any knowlede of this problem, please respond to this post.

Thanks,

Mitch

Is this a new model? Or do you mean "XA2"? (I think I've seen you post about the XA2).

The only reason I ask is because I have a XA2 and so far haven't had any problems with it and I'd like to keep abreast of any potential issues.

My mistake. It's the AX2. I will make the necessary changes to
reflect that in this thread.

Sounds like the shut-off bug reported over at AVS. Some people have been experiencing this.

I just received my XA2 a couple of weeks ago. I've only watched a handful of movies on it, but I've experienced no issues like this. My issues have been DD+ audio dropouts via bitstream.

Very discouraging news here.

Sounds like a known problem that Toshiba isn't fixing
via firmware and is forcing people to send for repair, which
I am not about to do.

How are people contacting Toshiba about this? I'd like
to at least call or email them and add my complaint to the
rest of the pile.

Re: Toshiba AX2 resetting itself several times during movie: Advice?

For what it's worth, I've got mine set to output 1080i - the maximum my display is capable of. Since you're getting a "resetting resolution" message, could it be a 1080p problem? You might try setting the XA2 to output 1080i maximum and see what happens. I know that's not a proper fix but it might at least narrow down the problem.

Steve,

Appreciate the suggestion. I just can't bring myself with 1080p
capability setting this machine at 1080i. I know the difference
is probably negligible, but now I'm more upset with the principle
of this problem.

Yeah, I know what you mean.

But it would give you a point to argue if you ever call them up to chew them out.

Re: Toshiba AX2 resetting itself several times during movie: Advice?

Yeah, we're not asking you to accept the problem and live with 1080i, but you really should try it out to narrow down the cause and do a little debugging.

For what it's worth, I have the XA-2 as well, and I haven't had any problems at all with it.

Re: Toshiba AX2 resetting itself several times during movie: Advice?

I've only played a about a half dozen movies on my XA2 and haven't had a single problem.

I have the two movies Ron mentioned so I'll give them a spin and see if they play through without any problems.

Re: Toshiba AX2 resetting itself several times during movie: Advice?

It could be the HDMI connection. Or the TV on the other side of that.

If somehow the HDMI logic tells the player not to use 1080i (or p), but a lower resolution, it has to reset.

This is one of the problems we are facing today: too much "intelligence" (hah, hah, hah) everywhere, so nothing acts straightforward, understandable and directly anymore. No simple checks, just try and wait, and try again, etc. (I just solved a tiny wiring error in my LAN today, after weeks of little problems and two days of intensive testing - the installer couldn't find anything until I finally was able to point the bad connection on the patch-panel out to him ).
