American Gladiators 2008

The show that was unquestionably the most important cultural event in all of human history returns on January 6 on NBC. I think I've read that it will be fundamentally different from the original run, but I don't know what that entails.

As a kid, I had a weekend ritual: American Gladiators followed by Degrassi Junior High, because nothing goes better with American Gladiators than Canadian angst. I watch AG on ESPN when I can, and it hasn't lost a thing.

Re: American Gladiators 2008

Hulk Hogan is what it entails. And, quite honestly, isn't that the one thing that could make American Gladiators even better?

Re: American Gladiators 2008

are you saying Hulk will be one of the gladiators?

No, he's one of the hosts.

Re: American Gladiators 2008

I'll be watching as I'm curious to see what they do with an updated version.

My favorite event, which I hope they keep, but update really cool is where one of the gladiators is firing at one of the contestants with an air gun and the contestant runs to different weapons stations knocking out the gladiators target.

Re: American Gladiators 2008

Assault. They should definitely have a version of that, since it's really close to what kids are playing with multiplayer first-person shooters.

Re: American Gladiators 2008

Hulk Hogan and Laila Ali (Muhammed Ali's daughter) are hosting.

Re: American Gladiators 2008

This should be good, low brow entertainment. Looking forward to it.

I went to a professional bull riding event as a lark and they were filming Celebrity Bull Riding. He was one of the contestants (along with Vanilla Ice). Unfortunately, I didn't get to see any of the riding.

Re: American Gladiators 2008

Wow! This is cool. I was such an AG junkie back in the day. I think an updated version would be awesome. I hope they add some cool new stunts.

Re: American Gladiators 2008

I will give this a try. As long as the lawyers haven't made them make everything so safe that they take away the fun.

I want there to be a chance the contestants can get hurt.

I suppose this aired tonight? I had a recording set up, so I'll watch it later if it did.

It's been fun so far. Decent gladiators. I like Wolf the best.

Captured it. Probably watch it tomorrow. I may change my mind after I watch it, but my instinct is I hope the regular episodes are only an hour.

Re: American Gladiators 2008

Both those women were pretty pathetic running the Eliminator.
I especially liked Koya who was still there grasping the rope on the incline even after Venus broke through the finish line.

I know it's American Gladiators but almost a little too showy and ridiculously funny when the Gladiators are doing their signature taunts

Re: American Gladiators 2008

Did that one contestant who was waiting 14 years to get on the show remind anyone else of Andy Bernard from the Office?

Re: American Gladiators 2008

I found it slightly comical that in the first episode, a contender and a gladiator both got hurt. I could only imagine the Exec Producer shaking his head during taping.

Anyway, I'm on board for the season. If only Hulk Hogan could learn to not be so...scripted.

Re: American Gladiators 2008

That King of the Hill game looked intense. the Gladiators were throwing the contestants off like they were rag dolls. LOL

I felt bad for the Marine Woman. She knocked herself silly when she hit her head on the steel bar underwater. You could tell she was dazed for the rest of the course. Got to love those marines. She lept going and finished even with blood running down her face. Semper Fi.

Re: American Gladiators 2008

The producers must tell the contestants to mouth off and be wise-arses.

And also. It's totaly unfair to the male contestants....They have to go against Superman!

On a more perverted note.... I wouldn't mind being pinned down by some of the female gladiators. "Why..Hello."

Re: American Gladiators 2008

I enjoyed it. I thought they went over the top with some of the stuff (the multiple-angle replays of the contestant collapsing during the first Powerball game), but it didn't detract from the show too much.

I was afraid they were going to pull a "Deal or No Deal" and have a commercial break in the middle of an event, but thankfully they didn't do that.

I'll keep watching it.

They seemed to be trying to sneak a little off the Ninja Warrior with a few of the obstacles and having folks now fall into water instead of mats.

I thought Wolf looked like a buff dirt covered Richard Branson.

Re: American Gladiators 2008

I watched episode 2 tonight, was busy last night so could not watch the premier. I also reviewed it for my website.

A few notes on the Gladiators. Toa is a cousin and stunt double for Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Justice is Justice Smith who was a contestant in one of the WWE's Tough Enough contests.

Gina Carano, AKA Crush, is one of the top female mixed Martial Artists in the world and her next fight will be Feb. 16 on Showtime.

Wolf is just awesome.

Re: American Gladiators 2008

Glad to see old friends on the HTF are checking out the show. I'm serving as the supervising sound editor on this one, so I popped in to see what the guys here we're saying about the show.

Of course, we had to finish all sound design and mixing on the first 3 hours in about 4 days... over the new years holiday: I didn;t sleep much last week.

Hope everyone keeps watching!

Re: American Gladiators 2008

Very cool, Vince. (Not the lack of sleep, but the HTF connection.)

And yes, Gladiators has a Season Pass from me on the TiVO. As long as they're made, I'll be watching.
