"The Apartment" Collector's Edition coming Feb 5th. - Page 2

Re: "The Apartment" Collector's Edition coming Feb 5th.

I looked for an object that would be of a recognizable shape, and found this clock. In the 2001 frame, if you measure the pixels, the clock is wider than it is tall, which would seem correct, since it is obviously seen from underneath, at an angle. In the 2008 version, the clock is a perfect circle, even though it is clearly not seen head-on.

Two other comparisons.

Again, if I'm wrong, please tell me why, it'd be great to find out that the transfer that looks better in every other way is also accurate here.

James:

I really don't see much of a difference.

I'm not saying you don't have a point. The clock are different but I don't see one obviously more round than the other.

There are other differences, clearly the head space on another image you posted is different thus making an apples to apples comparison difficult.

For what it's worth, this seems to be a trend with these new MGM remasters...'In the Heat of the Night' also looks slightly "stretched" when compared to the old version. It's hard to 100% judge the accuracy, though, since these are both older films.

I agree with James, the faces look too narrow indeed.
But at least we are getting more picture information with the new transfer.
What I don't get is the 5.1 track, though. Only takes away valuable disc space. MGM shouldn't forget this isn't a James Bond movie...

The new release of '12 Angry Men' looks stretched too - at least going by DVDBeaver's caps.

Re: "The Apartment" Collector's Edition coming Feb 5th.

I couldn't stand the thin faces, no matter how good the transfer was, so I returned the disc to Borders. It wasn't easy -- even to someone who understands DVDs, saying the image is too thin makes you sound like some idiot who has their DVD player on the wrong setting. Thankfully the manager gave me store credit, even though he and the clerks didn't have any idea what I meant, no matter how I tried to explain it.

Re: "The Apartment" Collector's Edition coming Feb 5th.

I'm surprised they let you return it, seeing that it's not a defect in the disc and you already opened it. You're lucky, but yeah they probably talked about you all day afterwards

I see your point though....the older release does have a more "natural" look to it.
