I need to convert a video!

Thread Starter
I have a WMV video and I need it in any of the following formats: MP3, MPEG, AVI, MPA, MOV, QT, SWF, to upload to a website. How can I convert to any of these?
Thanks!

Re: I need to convert a video!

There are lots of shareware and freeware programs that will convert between video formats. Virtual Dub is one of that I've used in the past. If you go to www.download.com or www.majorgeeks.com and do a search on "video conversion" you should come up with a number of programs to choose from.

Re: I need to convert a video!

Diane, for purposes of this discussion, we'll assume that the video you're trying to convert is something that doesn't run afoul of HTF's copyright and anti-bootleg Rules, and that it's something you have the full legal right to convert and share. But for future reference, you may want to familiarize yourself with our Rules. There's a link at the top of every page.

MPEG StreamClip will convert a great many file formats, and it's free. Try it.

In your search, keep in mind:

- MP3 is an audio format, not video
- There are several different kinds of MPEG; find out which they really support
- AVI and MOV are "container" formats, which support different kinds of content (can't think of a good analogy); again, the specifications have to be more precise.
- MPA is also an audio format
- QT and MOV are the same thing (and not precise enough)
- SWF is Flash. So you've got one

Diane:

I have to ask. Why do you have to convert it because you are going to be displaying it on a web page? There are plenty of players out there that will allow the playback of .wmv files on a web page.

Windows movie maker will allow you to convert a WMV file to an avi.
