After a long time of looking around now and then for a new A/V rack that can hold my slowly growing collection of AV gear, I've decided to embark on building my own flexi rack. My finished product will hopefully resemble something like this:

I ordered the threaded rod, nuts, and washers last night from McMaster-Carr. 8 rods in 2' lengths, zinc coated steel (stainless was $$$$ )

I need to decide between high quality plywood or MDF for the shelving now, which will be 20" x 66". MDF is not available locally, and I'm not sure if furniture grade plywood is either, so I may have to special order in either case, unless someone knows a place I can have custom cut shelves made and shipped up to Alaska.

I'll probably paint the shelves with primer then black paint. Not sure if I should paint the metal bits too. Will I have to worry about rust on the steel bits?
