Problem playing videos

I, like most of us, like to watch those little videos such as those posted on YouTube, Break, etc. Ever since I switched PCs last year I have had a problem playing these videos. I am not PC astute enough to figure it out. What happens is that the first video I play will play just fine for a bit over 2 minutes - sometimes longer - and then the video will become jerky and the sound will stutter and often become echoey until both video and sound stop for maybe 15 seconds. After that I'm fine but only for about 30-40 seconds more, then it starts over again. During this time anything else I try to do moves exceedingly slow. It's like nearly all the memory is being used. If I play another video the 2 minute problem period is skipped.

I am on Windows XP Home Edition, SP 2. I keep it up to date. It's an older Compaq PC, Pentium 4 1.50 GHZ with the maximum 512MB of RAM. I didn't have any problems on my many years old previous PC with a much slower CPU and half the RAM. There must be something I could adjust but I don't know what.

Any suggestions?

Re: Problem playing videos

Video not playing is like a car not starting. Could be one thing or several things. Video card, not enough memory, or perhaps the XP OS is just too much for your cpu with video playback. Available resources could be gone or close to used up when you boot up your computer depending on what programs you have installed.

Older computers have limited resources and finding the right solution can be tricky. First thing I would do would get rid of XP and install Windows 2000 which would be less demanding on your computer.
