Re: A3 hd dvd to 1080I tv?
Keith,
Films come in many different frame ratios. From 1:1.37 to 1:2.80 (and even wider) and several values in between. Because TV screens aren't made of rubber, they can only fill their screen totally if on some films either a part of the image is chopped off ("zoom" mode), or if the image is stretched (changing all shapes on it).
Many movie lovers don't like those two options: they don't want to miss part of the image they payed for or have to watch a funny looking film.
To get all of the image like the creators intended, sometimes a part of the TV screen has to display neutral info (black, some TVs allow you to choose this, e.g. grey for the side-bars) to display all of the movie without distortions.
Widescreen TVs have a nice common screen ratio of 16x9 (or 1:1.78). That's a good compromise. HD discs will always output a signal suited for that specific ratio and try to show all of the film in the proper shape.
You could use controls on your TV to chop off parts of the film (you payed for), or else to distort it, but you probably wouldn't like the resulting image, like you're already starting to like the uncompromised ones now.
