I've been running Premiere 6.5 after upgrading from 6.0, which came bundled with a Pinnacle DV500+. Since XP SP2, the Pinnacle hardware hasn't worked, and the performance of 6.5 on my new system has been less than stellar.
I don't know if it is a difference in hardware, or if the newer codecs don't agree with it, but it seems that now, especially considering the pending HD home video revolution, it might be wise to get something more up to date.
Two I am considering are Premiere CS3, and Pinnacle Studio 11 Ultimate.
CS3 has the strong track record of Adobe behind it, though it also has an upgrade price tag of $299. It also has a downloadable trial version.
PS11U has a lower price tag ($100 at Amazon), but Studio also has had a reputation for being rather finicky and crashing left and right. Reviews of 11 seem to agree that this new version is quite stable. It also includes boatloads of effects.
What I do with video: Make cool standard definition DVDs for friends and family of road trips and home movies. I do use more efects than basic transitions, though undoubtedly less than a full production studio.
The hardware I use: AMD Athon64 X2, dual Windsor core CPU, Asus Crosshair mobo, 2GB RAM, and dual GeForce 8600 cards supporting three monitors.
Whatever I end up using needs to be able to work with the existing hardware.
I'm definitely open to other software ideas, including updating Premiere 6.5 to work better.
I'd appreciate any help.
