Enclosure building

(moved from speaker and subwoofer section)

In the near future I will be on the market for a nice, larger sub (15 or 18) and I will be making the enclosure myself. Just wondering how many on here make their own enclosures and pic's of those enclosure builds would be a real help. I myself have made dozens of enclosures but almost all were for car audio, so I would definitely not be lost, but im just wondering how the home-audio guys do things when it comes to making enclosures.

So any and all pics of enclosure making would be appreciated

Thanks in advance

Re: Enclosure building

Construction of home and car enclosures are not much different. Quality materials like MDF and heavily braced. A few examples are building techniques are here and here. Or you could use Sonotube or another concrete cylinder form to build something like an SVS.

The design is where we run into differences. With sealed subs, you shoot for a final Q around 1.0 in a car but in the home you want the final Q at .707 or lower. In fact, I like mine around .5. This requires larger enclosures than what is needed in a car. With ported subs, larger enclosures are also needed. The main reason is for low tuning. Depending on the room, 25hz is as high as I would tune. Lower tune is better in my opinion. I've seen some home enclosures for 18's as large as 20 cubic feet and tuned to 11 hz.

The standard process is to pick a budget and the amount of real estate that you are willing to give up for the enclosure. We then work to build the best sub in that size. It may be an 18 or it could be a 12. We compare the designs using WinISD or Unibox. You pick one based on the simulations. Then choose the appropriate amp. Build and enjoy.

Re: Enclosure building

I built this sucker about 5 years ago, just for fun for a friend.
