I don't think it's fair to compare this to regular films since, as you mentioned, the ticket prices were 2-3x higher than for a traditional film. Also, from anecdotal reports, it was screening 24 hours a day which also seems unusual. Any "records" it is deemed to have set should at least have an asterisk.

Unless she pulls a "Zoey"

Although, on the outside, it looks like Billy Ray is doing a better job in parenting than the Spears. So Miley may have a future.

It's still unprecedented for a concert film, especially one that's a digital slap together job. Together with the phenomenal success of the "High School Musical" TV movies, it's a sign of the Disney Channel generation's consumer power.

Re: 2008 at the Box Office

I personally find it astounding and also quite disturbing that Hannah Montana actually topped the box office by a large margin. This and HSM are just vapid drivel that should never have got off the drawing boards. Yeah, it's kid's stuff, but the stuff I was watching as a kid was a hell of a lot better than this swill.

I also have much dislike towards Disney. They need to be brought down a peg or two.

Adam, if you don't mind my asking, what do you have against Disney?

Re: 2008 at the Box Office

Hmmm...Hannah Montana tops box office and sets records, Patriots lose the Superbowl...yep, two signs that The Apocalypse is coming (well, around New England it is)!

Eh, considering how much you hear about Hannah Montana concerts in the news and what not (plus the fact that they are charging $15 a ticket), I'm not all that surprised.

Re: 2008 at the Box Office

I'm impressed by the fact that nearly 2 million people paid that much to see the movie to begin with. Had it opened in "regular" theaters, it would've still debuted at #1 with over $13 million. That's still impressive for a movie opening in only 683 theaters.

In a regularly priced theater the movie would've still earned more than $19K per-theater. Not nearly as gaudy as $42K, but still a stellar number.

Many popular movies have had round the clock screenings in at least some parts of the country so that certainly isn't anything to demand an asterisk.

Well, we're heading into off-topic territory, but this has much to do with it:

Greg Burk of the Los Angeles Times reports that five heavy-metal concerts scheduled at House of Blues clubs on Walt Disney Co. property in Anaheim, California and Orlando, Florida have been hastily shifted to other venues or canceled recently, according to House of Blues web site calendars.

A Sept. 7 show featuring MACHINE HEAD, ARCH ENEMY, THROWDOWN and SANCTITY, booked two months earlier, was moved on two days' notice from the House of Blues in Anaheim's Downtown Disney entertainment complex to the Glass House in Pomona. Thursday's concert with CANNIBAL CORPSE, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, THE RED CHORD and THE ABSENCE, originally slated for the Anaheim House of Blues, was moved to the Galaxy Theatre in Santa Ana. A Sept. 26 Anaheim House of Blues concert featuring OBITUARY, ALABAMA THUNDERPUSSY, FULL BLOWN CHAOS and HEMLOCK has been canceled outright.

At the House of Blues in Orlando, Fla., on Disney World property, a Sept. 17 concert of the MACHINE HEAD lineup has been moved to Club Firestone in downtown Orlando. The same action has been taken with the Oct. 11 CANNIBAL CORPSE package.

Asked about the scheduling changes, John Vlautin, vice president of communications for Live Nation (formerly Clear Channel), the concert-promotion organization that owns the nationwide House of Blues chain, issued a statement Thursday that said only: "House of Blues offers a range of entertainment to match the audience at our venues. It was determined that the mix of entertainment at our two Disney locations should be different from our other venues."

Vlautin declined to comment on why metal bands have been singled out after years of similar bookings or whether other metal events already scheduled, including SUFFOCATION, EDGUY and STATIC-X, will be affected.

Rob Doughty, communications vice president for Disneyland Resorts, declined to comment, referring inquiries to Vlautin. Paul McGuigan, concert promoter at the Anaheim House of Blues, also declined to comment through a club spokeswoman.

The Walt Disney Co., through Vlautin, issued a short statement Thursday that included no specifics about the shifts of the metal concerts: "In consultation with Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, the House of Blues will provide a mix of entertainment for guests visiting Disney Resorts."

There have been other cancellations since this report.

Re: 2008 at the Box Office

Thanks for answering my question. I can see why someone (namely metal fans) would be frustrated with the company.

Back on-topic, Paramount execs seem to be very pleased with the initial online reactions to their spot for "Iron Man". Universal was also pleased with the response toward their spot for "Wanted". Both sides are confident that their movies will be major box office successes this summer. "Wanted" originally was going to be a March release, but the studio believed it was better suited for the summer season after seeing early cuts of it.

Speaking of Universal, looks like they will be unveiling the new trailer for "The Incredible Hulk" sometime next month.

Re: 2008 at the Box Office

I didn't get to see all of the commercials as I missed most of the first half or the superbowl. Other than Iron Man and Wanted, was (were) there any other TV trailers during the superbowl?

I definetely am looking forward to this summer's marvel movies (especially since Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
there will be some crossover between characters from both Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk. Hopefully leading the way to an Averngers movie.)

Superbowl ads were: Wanted, Iron Man, Leatherheads, Prince Caspian, Semi-Pro (plus one xover with Bud Light), Wall-E, Jumper, and You Don't Mess with the Zohan.

Thanks. I forgot about those. Except for Leatherheads, I did see them during the game.

Re: 2008 at the Box Office

After only 38 days, 2008 has passed the $1 billion mark domestically at the box office. Going into Friday, the year was sitting on a domestic haul of $1.008 billion. At this same point, '07 had tallied $850.2 million, '06 pulled in $911.5 million, '05 was sitting on a total of $888.2 million, while '04 had earned $874.5 million.

Admission sales are also up as '08 has sold about 145 million tickets thus far. At this same point, '07 had sold 124.6 million admissions, '06 moved a little more than 139 million tickets, '05 sold nearly 139 million, and '04 sold close to 141 million.

As for this weekend, business will be down compared to both last year (which was a 4-day holiday frame) and the year before. "Fool's Gold" looks headed for an opening north of the $20 million mark, while "Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins" will pull in between $12-$15 million, coming in slightly below studio expectations. 'Hannah Montana' will earn in the area of $10-$12 million. Both "Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show" and "The Hottie & the Nottie" completely crashed and burned with moviegoers.

This will probably be the only "down" period of the month as next weekend will see five new releases attempt to take advantage of both Valentine's Day and the President's Day four-day holiday session.

Re: 2008 at the Box Office

Weekend Estimates

#1 "Fool's Gold" $22.0 million
#2 "Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins" $17.1 million
#3 "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: The Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour" $10.5 million ($53.4 million) -66%
#4 "The Eye" $6.6 million ($21.5 million) -47%
#5 "Juno" $5.72 million ($117.6 million) -18%
#6 "27 Dresses" $5.70 million ($65.4 million) -33%
#7 "The Bucket List" $5.3 million ($75.1 million) -21%
#8 "Rambo" $4.11 million ($36.5 million) -42%
#9 "Meet the Spartans" $4.10 million ($33.9 million) -45%
#10 "There Will Be Blood" $4.10 million ($26.8 million) -13%
#11 "Untraceable" $3.5 million ($24.3 million) -31%
#12 "Cloverfield" $2.7 million ($75.9 million) -45%

This weekend marked the first "down" period of the year as business was off by 2% compared to last year, as well as being down 13% to this frame from '06. For the first time this year, the top twelve movies didn't earn more than $100 million as this weekend's earnings were $91.4 million.

2008 has so far tallied a whopping $1.120 billion, representing a 19% bump over '07 ($939.0 million), up 17% over '06 ($959.7 million), a stellar 23% stronger than '05 ($908.3 million), and an equally impressive 22% increase over '04 ($916.8 million).

WB's "Fool's Gold" topped the box office this weekend with a haul of just over $22 million. The flick pulled in a solid average of $7,043 from its 3,125 theaters, which was the third best of the top twelve. The movie was slammed by critics but the studio believes the movie will be aided by Valentine's Day on Thursday (as well as the four-day President's Day holiday frame), giving it a decent second-weekend hold.

Taking the second slot was Universal's "Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins". The comedy pulled in just over $17 million, giving an impressive $7,178 per-theater average from its 2,386 locations. That average was the second best of the top twelve. This one may also benefit from the long holiday frame next weekend.

Despite taking a 66% dip in business, Disney's 'Hannah Montana' concert film continues to bring in big numbers. The film averaged a top twelve best $15,295 from its meager 687 theaters and has so far netted more than $54 million.

Lionsgate's "The Eye" enjoyed a strong hold as it was off a moderate 47%. The film has so far earned $21.5 million. Look for this one to top out in the neighborhood of $30-$40 million.

Fresh off winning the WGA award for original screenplay last night for writer Diablo Cody (the adapted screenplay award went to the Coen bros. for "No Country for Old Men"), Fox Searchlight's "Juno" continues to pack theaters. The film has now pulled in a sensational $117.6 million. Fox's "27 Dresses" also is showing solid legs as it has now tallied more than $65 million.

WB's "The Bucket List" has now legged its way past the $75 million mark. Lionsgate's "Rambo" is sitting on a domestic haul of $36.5 million. Fox's "Meet the Spartans" has so far tallied just under $34 million. Paramount Vantage/Weinstein's "There Will Be Blood" rounds out the top ten as it has now pulled in close to $27 million.

With next weekend's four-day holiday frame, most of the new releases will be opening on Thursday (Valentine's Day) to get a jump on things. Paramount's "The Spiderwick Chronicles", Fox's "Jumper", Disney's "Step Up 2 the Streets", and Universal's "Definitely, Maybe" all open on Thursday, with the Weinstein's "George A. Romero's Diary of the Dead" hitting theaters on Friday.

The general consensus is that the battle for #1 will be between "The Spiderwick Chronicles" (which will boast the new trailer for "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull") and "Jumper". Regardless of who ends up on top, next weekend should be a very good one for the studios.

It's been an amazing year so far. Both films could be considered A-List tentpoles. To see films like "Cloverfield" and them launching in the January/February dumping ground is so exciting. What a great time in movies.

The movie could have made tons of money if it was done the normal way.
I was so dizzy after the movie was over. Couple poeple left the theater half way through. I'll pass on that when it comes out on DVD.

Re: 2008 at the Box Office

my quibble w/Cloverfield is that it was SD, not HD through and through. so releasing it on Blu-Ray won't have the same effect as if it was filmed w/HD cam. those main characters sure are cheap to film on SD .

re: box office. i've seen spiderwick in an advanced screening a week ago or somn. it was so bad, just as bad as golden compass. only people who read the book get it. i didn't read the book for either movies. sorry even IMAX wasn't able to save it.

i predict jumper to be the big hit.

Re: 2008 at the Box Office

Jumper has terrible reviews, though... too bad, the concept looks interesting. At least it can't be as bad as Ultraviolet, etc.

No, it was shot in HD using a mixture of the actual camera shown in the film (the Panasonic HVX200, a prosumer HD cam), and the professional Sony CineAlta (Like the one used for Star Wars, only newer/better).

With respect, the entire trailer was handheld footage. What gave you the impression it'd be otherwise?

well, the quality looks bad even in the cinema... i wonder how it will look on both DVD vs. Blu-Ray. it's so degraded.

The oft-reported intense craving to turn Cloverfiled into a generic monster flicks is astonishing as it is depressing.

I don't want it to be "generic" - I just want it to be something I can watch without getting motion sick...

Re: 2008 at the Box Office

I agree, they wasted a damn good monster in all that shaky cam crap. I should have waited for the dvd. Looks like word of mouth was nil. Not surprised.

Re: 2008 at the Box Office

How can people be complaining about the cam look when that was the entire point of the film? It would be like hating Lord of the Rings cause it's fantasy? Without it, it's a run of the mil Godzilla movie which we already got 10 years ago. The point IS that it's all filmed on a camcorder.

Re: 2008 at the Box Office

This really isn't the thread, but I'll admit, I'm one of those that left the theater to throw up. I really don't care if it's "the look" any look that makes me that uncomfortable is not a good look, no matter what.. it's like asking someone to punch you in the face a few times.. who the hell needs that? I don't need it to be a generic monster flick, and I can deal with shaky cam (Bourne are GREAT at doing it with purpose) but the non-stop shaky cam is enough that I definitely warded people away and probably helped with it's low follow through (when my employees asked about it, I told them it made me sick, most passed).

In Ft Collins, CO, on valentines day, step up 2 the streets and definately, maybe both sold out, but spiderwick and jumper did not (I went at 8 pm). Very strange, since I thought it would be the other way around.

Re: 2008 at the Box Office

Early Thursday Estimates...

#1 "Step Up 2 the Streets" $6.2 million
#2 "Jumper" $6.0 million
#3 "Fool's Gold" $3.4 million ($28.8 million)
#4 "Definitely, Maybe" $2.8 million
#5 "The Spiderwick Chronicles" $2.2 million
#6 "Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins" $1.9 million ($20.1 million)
#7 "Juno" $840K ($119.5 million)
#8 "The Bucket List" $785K ($77.0 million)
#9 "The Eye" $745K ($23.1 million)
#10 "27 Dresses" $665K ($66.8 million)
#11 "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: The Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour" $525K ($55.1 million)
#12 "There Will Be Blood" $363K ($27.9 million)

Based on these early numbers, the race for #1 is going to be a tight one over this long holiday weekend as both 'Step Up 2' and "Jumper" got off to good starts. Look for "The Spiderwick Chronicles" to do most of its damage on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday when schools are out.

With "Diary of the Dead" opening today, there seems to be a little bit of everything out there for moviegoers. This looks to be a very lucrative weekend for the studios.
