Are there fed/state guidelines on 4-way intersections?

With a 4-way stop sign? Are they supposed to be labelled as such? I find it pretty helpful as a driver to identify them.

Was in CT and at a 4-way but I didn't realize it cause I stopped at my stop sign and saw a car coming from my right. Until he stopped, I didn't realize it was a 4-way stop intersection... Kind of confusing as the ones I see in NJ usually are labelled as such with a little sign below the stop sign...

The rule is the same everywhere to my knowledge. in the absence of signage or lights a 4-way intersection is treated as a 4-way stop. Straight traffic has priority then everyone yields to the car to the right.

I could be wrong though.

Re: Are there fed/state guidelines on 4-way intersections?

This is clearly a 4-way stop situation as each street has a stop sign, however, I did not see the the stop signs that are obviously pointed away from me so as a driver, I presume it was basically a 2 way stop intersection with the cross traffic having the right of way. It wasn't until the car coming towards the intersection on my right stopped that I saw the stop sign that he had and then realized it's a 4-way stop intersection. This would be made much more clearer if the stop sign on my street was labelled with the "4-way" sign I've seen on those kind of intersections.

Are you supposed to give way to the car on the right? I thought you gave way to whoever got there first!

My understanding is that whoever get's there first has the next turn, and it's the person to the right who has priority if there is a "tie".

Of course, if all four cars arrive at the same time, then the process is for each car to inch out a little bit, and stop, look at the other drivers for a sign of weakness, and then inch out a bit more. Repeat this process until someone backs down.

I thought the guy with either the biggest or the oldest piece of junk went first.

OK, before the thread drift, this is what I thought all 4 way stop signs are supposed to look like:

notice the little red 4-way sign on the bottom... Apparently, the ones I ran into in CT don't have them... so it looks like a normal 2 way stop unless you notice the signs on the cross road..

There is in fact the federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices which states that "4-WAY" or "ALL WAY" shall be used. But it is up to the states to adopt these rules, and they may amend them.

I never thought of it specifically, but when I had the shitty old Chrysler I'd jut right out into the intersection and stake my claim. When I upgraded to a less-shitty old Corolla suddenly I was suddenly yielding like crazy.

Every 4-way intersection I saw when I lived in New York had them. Traveling in other states has been more hit and miss. Montreal up north of the border was the worst, though. No 4-way stop signs, and no stop signs period. Four directions of traffic come together all thinking they have the right of way and then have to negotiate on their own last minute.

Here in Fresno where it's 100+ from mid May to mid Sept. the guy with no AC has the right of way.

Re: Are there fed/state guidelines on 4-way intersections?

Here in Idaho we have the "all way" rectangle below the Stoptogon (is that a real word?). In case of a 2 way stop, below the Stoptogon is a yellow rectangular sign stating that cross traffic doesn't stop.

Here there are lots of 2-lane roads with 50 mph speed limits that cross at stop sign intersection.
