PS3 2.00 fimrware update coming tomorrow (11/8)

Doesn't look like it's going to be all that amazing but I do like the ability to have customized themes.

The update is actually available now. I updated a couple of hours ago (it is now a little after 11pm central time).

If you use your PS3 as a Blu-ray player, this update is worthless. No DTS Master decoding, no hi-res audio bitstream, and I see no indication of increased interactivity support (Profile 1.1), though how would we know since there is no software yet.

Hi-res bitstream output has pretty much been proven that it is not a possibility with the PS3 due to hardware limitations in the HDMI 1.3 chip used.

HOWEVER, I am VERY dissapointed with the lack of DTS MA decoding for this update. I was for sure it would be included now that a blu player is available with it. SUCKS!

IS there a player that decodes it? I know there's one with bitstream capability.

I think Sony has some kind of pact with the CE companies that they won't beat them to the market with features, enabling those companies to actually sell some players. They are the anti-Toshiba.

A personal friend of mine, who is at a very high post in a CE company, had told me the same thing. He also shared that Sony had been prepared, cost wise, to drop the prices on the PS3 much sooner and more deeper, but they have been under imense pressure, from the other CE manufacturers and also Sony's own CE division, to not cannabalize the stand alone player market.

What a yawner. 2.00 should have been reserved for some major updates and functionality like Chris suggests. What we got should have been 1.94.

Really nothing of consequence added on the BD front.

Perhaps a huge marketing campaign for the PS3 and Blu-ray is on the way:

"the difference .1 can make"

Java 1.1 on Firmware 2.1!! On the PS3.

And if it is NOW part of their ad campaign, say the word and I'll give my 2 weeks, Sony.

I deliberately didn't post one of my marketing ideas, but Toshiba went ahead and decided to give players away with Star Trek.

It's not just that it's an "even number". In the programming world, you generally hold off the "whole number" versions (i.e. 1.0, 2.0, 3.0) for major updates. So far, Sony's been increasing the version increment by very small amounts. So when firmware hits 2.0, after historically increasing the version number by .1 or, in some cases, .01, you've set a precedent that 2.0 is going to be something special. Especially since they've still got 1.94-1.99 to go!

Maybe, 1.95 thru 1.99 were taken up by internal builds. Maybe, Sony wants to use the 2.0 to signify the 2nd yr of the PS3 since launch. Just theories, but quite possible. I know some software that follow the logic of the major number to represent a whole year. Anyhow bottom line is I am quite dissapointed that there is nothing in 2.0 for Blu-Ray disc (video).

PS: 'DualShock 3 support' was already provided in v1.94 which has been provided on the 'Ratchet & Clank - Tools of Destruction' game Blu-Ray disc. An awesome game too by the way, something that allows my son to also play a shoot em game without me worrying about the blood & gore of other shoot em games. Nah, that's just an excuse, we all love it.

I had 1.93 via download, and someone posted that 1.94 was available via some BD or PS3 game disc that you popped in.

I believe Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction will add 1.94 which enables the DualShock 3 controller (i.e. we finally get the rumble back).

And is anyone else having issues with 2.00? I had two games freeze up on me yesterday. Once while loading and another when trying to exit. Anyone else?

I have not had any games freeze up, but I have noticed a slight sluggishness while moving around the xmb.

PS: DIVX has made an official statement today that they have tied up with Sony to provide DIVX support on the PS3 via a forthcoming firmware update. Personally I don't care about DIVX but I am sure there must be quite a few who are.

Sorry, I'm not up to speed on my PS3 terminology. I keep reading references to the 'XMB' everywhere. What is that? Is it just the interface where you navigate through the settings, music, video, games, etc?

That is exactly what 'XMB' is, atleast that is what I have concluded myself. Why it is called that? I have no idea.

See? If I hadn't put up that thread in the audio-visual forum about this firmware update adding 5.1 sacd --> 5.1 DTS conversion to the PS3, the other surround nerds here would have never known about it! :pats self on back:

I think it stands for "Cross Menu Bar."

They souped it up a bit in 2.0, which is probably why it seems a little slower. I was forced to download the 2.0 update before downloading the Ratchet & Clank demo.

I agree -- R&C is a pretty sweet game.

BTW, my 2-month-old 60 GB console is down to 23 GB free!
