Password Vaults and Thumb Drive Keys

I'm looking for ease of use in better security. Some sites, particularly financial sites, are requiring passwords containing upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.

I have accounts I can't remember passwords for.

I used to have a Norton program that would remember them for me, which was wonderful. However, it was buggy, and sometimes wouldn't work, particularly if a site changed its login page, and Norton could no longer recognize it. Also, it kept no log file, so I had no way to look up passwords within the program if a login page changed.

I found this: http://keepass.info/ But I'd never heard of them, so who knows...it could be a malware or spyware disguised as a free utility. I know it can run on a thumb drive, which is something else I would like to consider for security of the machine itself...a thumbdrive "key" that allows the system to work. I've even seen some biometric thumb drives. Very James Bond.

What are you using on your system in regard to system security (virus and malware, too), password safes, and possibly hardware keys?

Re: Password Vaults and Thumb Drive Keys

Mac OS X has a Keychain, which stores passwords. There's an app that you can use to browse it. You can sync the Keychain on different computers through their .Mac service.

If I'm on a Windows box, and I forget a password, I wake the Mac -- but that's me I guess there is no OS-level scheme, so you can use a third-party app or whatever's built into each app. Firefox has its own password manager, for example.

Haven't really looked into hardware keys.

I've been using SplashID for five years now, and I really like it. It's got Mac, PC, and PDA versions; the PC/Mac sync with the PDA software. I don't know if it can be installed on a keydrive, though.

This looks pretty damned secure: Stealth MXP. No one will be on my system without permission, or without cutting off the appropriate finger to scan.

In some movies, giving the bad guys very good reasons to cut off parts of your body is not a good idea

Well, shit...I hope they don't want to see too badly into my Quicken files how overdrawn I am!

Re: Password Vaults and Thumb Drive Keys

I kind of like Keepass. It's even integrated in the very nice PortableApps system; http://portableapps.com/ - I run that on a Sandisk titanium USB key that's on my keychain and is holding up very nicely due no doubt in part to the tough exterior and retractable USB connector.

That gives you a very nice and easy way to run apps off any thumb drive, though.

I even run the Pocket PC version to keep my passwords available on the run; keeping the database file synchronized between multiple places is a bit of a challenge but nothing insurmountable.

Then there's the good old Password Safe, of course. Open source and everything, so lots of eyes on the code to make sure there are no cuckoos in there. http://passwordsafe.sourceforge.net/
