Disney's Pixar Short Films Collection

Thread Starter
Nice to finally have some of these on one disc - and to watch the progression in computer animation. The last one, Lifted, I found to be the best overall - quite funny. Pricing as usual is a bit stiff but watching The Ghost Light and Mike's New Car in 1080 was worth it for me. The Special Feature on the history of pixar was a nice addition as well and informative - HD of course!

Is Knick Knack the "re-boobed" version??

Thanks

^In the review in the SD thread, the reviewer said it was the Finding Nemo version. And you can bet that this will be the same.

And here, as it was in the SD thread, it is still a shame.

I would have thought Pixar would hold themselves above the "revisionist" fray.

Re: Disney's Pixar Short Films Collection

I don't know, this isn't exactly the Eyes Wide Shut censoring. I honestly don't care if a couple CG toys have D-cups or A-cups.

Speak for yourself, Brandon...I need my CG titties!

LOL!

That's almost signature worthy. Almost.

According to the back of the packaging, the shorts are included. However, they are referred to as being ported from the DVD features. So, they are probably in SD, but I haven't verified that. It would make sense from a business perspective however, if you want HD shorts, you have to buy the separate The Pixar Short Films Collection.

Re: Disney's Pixar Short Films Collection

Lifted and One Man Band are both presented in glorious hi-def on the their respective discs.

Re: Disney's Pixar Short Films Collection

Brett, OK, thanks for clearing that up. That's excellent. I will say that I am still glad I purchased the Short Films Collection because it will be nice to watch all the shorts in one shot without having to fumble through many discs to do it.

Re: Disney's Pixar Short Films Collection

I went through this entire disc last night (there MAY have been one or two shorts I skipped over in my zeal to watch favorites and those I hadn't seen before) and report it IS terrific!

One oddity. The menu music seemed MUCH LOUDER than the volume on the shorts themselves. Loud enough that I had to be sure to turn down or mute the volume on my receiver whenever the shorts finished and the menu was about to pop up.

Did anyone else notice this?!

I was listening to the DD 5.1 over the coaxial from by BD player to receiver. I did not think to give it a try on my 5.1 connections and the PCM audio track. I'm still working on configuring my system (getting all the bugs worked out) as I integrate the BD player.

I also watched the documentary on the history of the Pixar shorts and found it quite informative and entertaining at the same time. It's something to watch the metamorphosis of the Pixar guys and their gear from the mid 80s to present. Funny to see Ben Burtt's name on their first effort (through LucasFilm).

Re: Disney's Pixar Short Films Collection

so this being vol 1
only meaning this is the first set of expected future volumes?

all the shorts are now on br?

Re: Disney's Pixar Short Films Collection

I imagine that they are "future proofing" by saying Volume 1. Theoretically, in 4-5 years there will be enough for a Volume 2.

Yup. Even ones you've likely never seen (early stuff before Luxo, Jr.) Look great.

And, again, the doc is really interesting.

There are also rarely seen Luxo, Jr. clips taken from Sesame Street that are kinda cool.

Kinda like Mel Brooks' History of the World Part 1

Re: Disney's Pixar Short Films Collection

I think I read that there are 3 shorts in Vol 1 that have never been on home vid. before.

Mine should arrive shortly. Can't wait to check it out.

Far from it. I believe there have been some tweaks to Ratatouille from its theatrical to video release.

Here are some Brad Bird quotes from an article in this week's Home Media Magazine:
“We added little geek stuff like the top tuft of Linguini’s hair blowing in the wind during a motorcycle ride,” Bird said. “John [Lasseter] came up with the idea of having Remy receive a little chef’s hat at the end of the movie and put it on his head in the last scene. I also slipped in extra notes for music for the home audio. If they give me the extra time for Blu-ray, I’m always trying to make the movie better.” http://www.homemediamagazine.com/new...ticle_id=11472

Bird's apparently been studying under George Lucas, eh?!

The Digital Bits review linked to this from 2003 (that shows before and after pics)...

Regards,
Just for clarification purposes, I think some of you need to watch Ron Epstein's podcast of a Bird interview that some of the HTF Administrators attended last week in LA. By the way, the writer of that article was at the same interview which is why you need to see the podcast for full disclosure instead of mine or that writer's take on what Bird was talking about. Anyhow, as I was sitting in the audience during his interview, I got the clear indication from Bird that he wants his films to be the best they can. He mentioned some of the work done on his film for the theatrical release weren't up to his expectations and that he wanted them corrected. However, due to a business decision (the corrected work wouldn't be ready for its theatrical release date), he relented, but was determined to have those film sequences corrected for the video releases since timing wouldn't be an issue in that case.

It's really a great interview that I recommend all of you watch which really gives some insight into Bird, who is always pushing to get the most out of his films. The links to the Bird interview are at the bottom of the page linked below.

To be fair to both Brad Bird and George Lucas, film makers are rarely completely happy with the released version of their films. I believe it was Lucas who said "films are never finished, they are abandoned". But Jack Warner is quoted as saying "I don't want it good, I want it Thursday".

The point being, Warner was right. If you give the film maker unlimited amounts of time to finish a film, you'll never get it. They will tinker with it forever. As a film maker myself I've come to realize that nothing motivates like a hard deadline. But there is always that impulse to go back and fix the little things that have bothered you, even years later. For a director the released film is almost always a huge compromise.

I think Lucas was paraphrasing Orson Welles when he said that.

Re: Disney's Pixar Short Films Collection

It's a few months late but did this come with a slipcase (like Cars and Ratatouille did)? Yes, I've got collector's OCD.

Thanks for the info. I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for the slipcase one now.

Re: Disney's Pixar Short Films Collection

It's a great release, Travis.

Whenever I have some friends over who want to see my HT, that's usually the disc I go to because it includes short self-contained stories with great PQ & SQ. Always a crowd pleaser.

==============

As an aside, did anyone else ever notice the volume discrepancy between the music that plays during the menu and the volume of the rest of the disc's content?

Yeah, I bought the DVD (since it was the 'old' days of the format war). I love the Pixar stuff so much, I don't even mind rebuying it a few months later. Bizarrely, I'm more concerned about the dopey paper slipcase than the $20 or so that I'll spend on it again.
