Problem with receiver cutting out... bad wiring or speakers?

I installed a pretty nice receiver (brand new Marantz SR-6001) for a client of mine last weekend and he's been having problems with the circuit protection tripping. I stopped by his house the other night and I noticed he had both speaker A and B set to 'ON', but he only has speakers on A. I switched it to A only and made sure it worked.

That was 2 days ago. Today he called me and told me he's having the same problem. He said the circuit protection is shutting the unit down again. I told him he probably has issues with the wiring or with one of the outside speakers (I set up the speakers using the multi-zone speaker output). He said that before I hooked everything up that he never had this problem. Of course when I first got there he had all the speakers wired wrong, so half of them weren't working. I told him he might having a wiring issue or one of the speakers is shorting out. He ran the wiring and hooked up the speakers. They're all working when I use the test tone.

What do you guys think the problem could be? Bad receiver maybe?

I've never had problems like this with anyone. Luckily he lives close to me so I'm not wasting too much travel time on him.

Thanks

Re: Problem with receiver cutting out... bad wiring or speakers?

I'd suggest trying to isolate the problem first: Is it an electrical problem (i.e. short or overloaded circuit)? Or is there a problem with the receiver or speakers / speaker wiring? Trying powering the receiver from a different outlet on a different circuit (ideally with no other devices) to see if the problem still occurs. If that solves the problem, then you know that there is a problem with the original circuit (i.e. short or overloaded). If that doesn't solve the problem (circuit breaker continues to trip), then you have a problem with the receiver / speakers / speaker wiring. At that point I'd disconnect all of the speaker wires and re-connect one pair at a time and test the receiver to see if you can get the problem to repeat. Hopefully the problem would occur while testing one of the pairs. Lastly, if you wanted to test the receiver, I'd suggest hooking it up in a different environment (take it to your house) in which you know that the speakers / wiring are working along with adequate power. A tripped circuit in this situation would likely indicate a problem with the receiver.

Hope this helps and hope you get it solved.

Eh, I think the outside speakers are bad. We put in a CD and it played for 2 and a half songs before the receiver cut out. I brought the speakers inside and played them at the same volume and it did the same thing. I hooked up the main speakers to the output for the outside speakers and everything was fine.
