Audyssey MultEQ: Questions and Answers - Onkyo, Denon, et. al. - Page 7

Re: Audyssey MultEQ: Questions and Answers - Onkyo, Denon, et. al.

Plochner,

I am not an expert by any means. However, it sounds as if you have either one of two possible problems. First; the hiss could be electrical interference from another electrical device's power. Turn on the amp and set the system up to where you can hear this hissing sound. Then start unpluging different components that are in the area (Game consoles, TV, Cable Box, Wifi router, ect...) or plugged into the same power socket. As you unplug each componenet see if you note a reduction in the hiss.

If that does not work. Try running an extension cord from an entirely different power source to the Amp. This will help isolate the AMPs power.

If that don't work double check the Bass and treble settings menu in the AMP and check to see if the treble is not cranked up too high.

Did you set all your speakers to Small or crossover to 80Hz or higher.

Good luck with resolving your problem.

Re: Audyssey MultEQ: Questions and Answers - Onkyo, Denon, et. al.

Thanks for the update Adamg. I ended up returning my 607 and looking for a replacement unit. When they didn't have any replacements, I spent a few extra bucks on a brand new Yamaha RX-V565, which has so far worked fantastic. Unfortunately, the Audessey-like YPAO automatic setup doesn't seem as good as the Onkyo's. When I could get Audyssey working without the hiss (only on certain DD 5.1 signals), it truly enveloped the room in sound. The YPAO's auto-EQ does a good job, but not like Audyssey.

Re: Audyssey MultEQ: Questions and Answers - Onkyo, Denon, et. al.

I have used the Audessey setup feature on a Denon AVR-4308CI with Proficient C870 ceiling speakers installed in a 12' high ceiling and had excellent results. I used the auto setting and let the system do all calibrations including auto discovery of attached speakers to the system. (I could have told the system which speakers were attached first)

You commented that you did the calibration in 3 positions. If I remember correctly the Denon manual suggested a minimum of 6 test positions up to a maximum of 8. I did the setup using 7 seating positions in total then saved the results. I had also updated the receiver to the most current software via the web first. Results were excellent.

Not all versions of Audyssey can go to 8 potions. Some, like on the Onkyo 606, can only do 3. Others can go to 6 or 8. Look for MultEQ XT.

Re: Audyssey MultEQ: Questions and Answers - Onkyo, Denon, et. al.

I tried to use Audyssey setup the other day and I ended up getting the "speaker not detected" error message. It was able to find my fronts, center, and my right rear. After that, it would popup saying "speaker not detected" I tried a few times from different positions as well as having the mic a little higher than the initial setup. I have no idea what to do now either. I tried to set it up manually but the sub deff. doesn't pound as well as I was expecting it to. Also today when I was playing guitar hero, my speakers started to crackle. It sounded similar to crinkling celophane (sp?) Any idea what would be causing that?

thanks

Make sure that your surround speakers are connected to Left and Right Surround terminals and not to the Back Surround terminals. The Back Surround connectors are for 7.1 systems. If you have a 5.1 system the surround speakers should not be connected there.

The crackling noise sounds like your speakers are distorting. Game consoles don't follow standard levels so you may be overloading the input to the receiver.

Hello,

Thanks very much for the reply. I do have my speakers connected to the back surround terminals so I will move them to the surround terminals.
As far as the speaker distortion is concerned, how can I fix this while using my PS3 for games? I use my PS3 as my blu-ray player and there's no distortion.

On a side note, I've been reading about setting the speakers to "small" or "large" I've never seen any such setting to do that. On my 706 would that be similar to setting the ohm rating to 4 or 6 for the speaker config?

Your Onkyo uses "Full Range" for "large". Choosing anything else means "small". If after running Audyssey, Onkyo sets any of your speakers to "Full Range", change them to 80 Hz. Also, set the LPF to 120 Hz. Leave the ones not set to "Full Range" alone.

Always leave the OHM setting at 6 (even if you have 4ohm speakers).

Thanks for the input Dave. I was looking for the small & large speaker setting everywhere in the setup menu and couldn't find anything! haha

Re: Audyssey MultEQ: Questions and Answers - Onkyo, Denon, et. al.

what do I do about the distortion caused by the PS games? The only game I noticed this on was GH. I had my g/f try the game last night (I'm away at work) and she said that it never made the crackling noise this time. I also had her change the rear speakers from back surround to L + R surround. Would this have made the difference??

Thanks again

Not sure what would cause distortion on a video game. Since there are no standards for sound with video games, you may find big differences from game to game. Did you modify any of the settings after running Audyssey? How does it sound with movies (DVD or Blu)?

Also, your surround speakers should be L/R surround and they should be on the sides of your listening area. Rear (or back) surrounds are for the 7.1 setup. These are the only speakers that are actually behind you.

I'm surprised Audyssey completed with the surrounds incorrectly connected.

I can count on you for a reply Dave I appreciate it!! I haven't run Audyssey since the speakers were moved from Back surround to L/R surround. I'm away @ work so my g/f switched the wires to the proper terminals. I will run Audyssey when I get home on Monday and see how it sounds. I will also post what it set everything at as well for all to view.
I have my surround speakers placed at the corner of my couch where the back and arm meet. The speakers are placed at an angle facing the tv. Would you suggest a different placement for proper placement??

Re: Audyssey MultEQ: Questions and Answers - Onkyo, Denon, et. al.

I just ran the Audyssey set up and this is what it has configured, please review.

Front = 100Hz
Center = 80 Hz (THX)
Surround = 60 Hz
LPF = 120 Hz

I still cannot find where it allows you to put the speakers as small or large, or whatever the case is depending on what your system calls it. If anyone has any input I would appreciate it. I am using the Onkyo 706 receiver.

Looks good. You speakers are set to "small". If they were set to "large", the display would read "FULL" instead of 100Hz.

How does it sound?

Hi Dave,

Again, thank you for the reply! It sounds great, I love it and I appreciate all the help you've given me with this from the start!
Upto this point, I've still never found anywhere that says the speakers are set to large or small. I've only seen a Hz rating....ah well, either way it sounds good. One thing I did notice though, on certain shows I watch, the receiver will automatically change the sounds settings on it's own. Is that just the Audyssey doing that?

No, that is based on the source and your listening mode presets. Somewhere in your menu you will find the page to change your presets. What you choose is up to you. I use PLIIx for most everything. I did try THX Select 2 and I'm still on the fence which I like better.

I think I know where these changes can be made. I'll have to search for them and see how it's all set up. I'm deff. still in the learning process with all of this as there's lots to learn and understand.

In my presets I don't get an option for the PLII or THX 2 Select for some reason. It will only use these presets if your source recognizes them is this correct? I'm running a Shaw HD cable box so I thought it would recognize most of the setting for sound.

Are you looking at the preset menu or just cycling through them with the remote?

BTW - we should make a new thread for this. It's getting way off topic.

I started a new thread Dave, please take a look at it. I am looking through the preset menu but it doesn't give me an option for THX select 2 at all. I want to set my PS3 (which I use for games and movies) and my Shaw HD cable box to PLII and I'd like to do the same if I'm listening to music

Re: Audyssey MultEQ: Questions and Answers - Onkyo, Denon, et. al.

I, too, am a little curious about the results from the MultiEQ setup on my Denon AVR-3808. I'm running a Paradigm 7.1 system with Studio 60 mains, CC-590 center and ADP-390 dipole surrounds.

Anyway, it set up my mains and center as "large" (not sure why), and all else small. All crossovers are at 90Hz, except the back surrounds, which are 110Hz.
The levels were set to anywhere from -4.5 to -6db, except for the sub which was set to +3 and I promptly had to dial it down to -3 because it was way too overpowering.

The room sounds reasonably good, except the back row gets more bass than the front row, but I think that's a room issue I'll need to address later with bass traps, etc.

Just wanted to get some opinions on my results

Re: Audyssey MultEQ: Questions and Answers - Onkyo, Denon, et. al.

I'm getting "speaker not detected" on my main speakers which is preventing my Audyssey calibration process from completing. I have a Paradigm Reference Studio 100 v.5 system that is brand new. So I don't think I have any drivers blown as I haven't played anything on them yet.

During the Audyssey auto-calibration test tone process, I'm noticing that the chirps emitted from my front mains sound a couple of octaves lower from the rest of my speakers. Also, the characteristic high pitch "clap" sound at the end of the chirp is not apparent through my mains as opposed to the rest of the speakers. I've swapped out my fronts for some cheap bookshelves as a test (I heard the characteristic "chirp" then "clap" immediately), and this allowed the Audyssey calibration to complete. This is quite strange.

Here is further info on my setup:

i - I have a 5.1 setup so my surround speakers are connected as L/R surround (NOT rear or back surrounds, which are for 7.1 setup) and they are on the sides of my listening area.
ii - My mains are set to "Full Band"

Here is what I've already tried:

1 - Checking the connections--I've even reversed the wiring as a test, but get the same results (negative)
2 - Using different speakers as already mentioned (positive)
3 - Using a different speaker wire (negative)
4 - Taking the grills off my speakers (negative)

I'm using an Integra DHC-9.9 pre-amp. What else can I try to resolve my issue ?

Are you biamping? It certainly sounds like the tweeters are not playing and that would cause the speakers to sound "a couple of octaves lower" and also cause MultEQ to have detection problems.

Re: Audyssey MultEQ: Questions and Answers - Onkyo, Denon, et. al.

Chris, thanks for the very quick response.

No, I'm not bi-amping. The banana plugs are connected to the bottom pair connectors on the mains. I've even tried connecting the banana plugs to the top pair connectors on the mains. I have the exact same connections on my center and it's emitting the chirps properly.

I would make extra sure that the connectors to the tweeters are not accidentally disconnected on the back of the speaker.

Chris, how would I test my connectors to my tweeters? Would I have to take something apart ?

I meant the metal tabs on the back of the speaker that connects the woofer and tweeter terminals. I assume your speaker has two pairs of terminals that are usually connected with external metal tabs. Are they there and tightly connected? Sometimes they can come loose when you connect your speaker wire to one terminal pair.

Re: Audyssey MultEQ: Questions and Answers - Onkyo, Denon, et. al.

Chris, right, I apologize for my misunderstanding. My mains do indeed have two pairs of terminals and, yes, they are there and tightly connected.

OK, so now we need to make sure the tweeters are indeed playing. Do you have a CD with high frequency test tones or pink noise?
