I finally got a chance to pick up this set and I'm really impressed! I've never seen the stooges look so good. I really hope Sony will see this series through to the end; I love seeing "Volume 1" in the title. My local Fry's only had one copy of the new set but tons of the older Stooge compilations. I wish Sony would just recall the older DVDs so that consumers buy the new series.

That's where I got mine. They only had two copies when I picked mine up - and they were in the TV section! All of the older Sony compliation discs were on the Comedy section. Needless to say when I first saw that I thought they were sold out so I was worried. No other stores in my area even carry the set.

A little off the subject, however the new Columbia DVD release of Golden Boy has a short included with Shep Howard titled "Please To Mitt You." It is a 1940 short with Shep has a featured actor. Print is in the same excellent condition that the Stooges volume is in. Here's to Columbia for adding the short. I hope they keep this up.

Yeah I noticed Pleased to Mitt You was on the new Golden Boy DVD. I think it'd be a nice bonus on some of the later volumes to include the Shemp and Besser Columbia solos. I mean they own them, why not?

I have a bootleg set of Shemp's Columbia shorts and they're all hilarious. I recently watched "A Hit With a Miss" which is a re-working of the Stooges' "Punch Drunks", and it was great.

Hope to see more restored ones down the line.

Re: HTF DVD REVIEW: The Three Stooges Collection Vol. 1 (1934-1936) (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)

Just finished watching this. Haven't seen The Three Stooges at all since TV in the early 60s. Took me a couple shorts to get into it, then I noticed I was LOL a few times for each one.

Couple questions for the afficionados. Do you think the sound effects were re-recorded? They seem awfully clear/prominent and different than the other sound. (Remember I haven't seen these for ~45 years.) Also, way OT, but do you know the name of that beautiful woman who first (I think) shows up in Hoi Polloi? When you watch it, I'm sure you'll know the one I mean (even among the lots of them they tended to use), she really stands out. I wonder if she became more famous. Thanks.

Re: HTF DVD REVIEW: The Three Stooges Collection Vol. 1 (1934-1936) (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)

Finished this set last weekend and was blown away and how good these shorts looked. Absolutely incredible! It's even more amazing considering the poor shape that Columbia theatrical films from this era are in.

For Stooge-philes: are some of the titles not the originals? I read somewhere that the first short (where the Stooges were supporting players) had new titles added to keep the format the same with the others. Also, I wondered about the Lucille Ball short. She has top billing, but her part is not that big nor was she all that well known at the time. Was that title changed to reflect her later fame? I should clarify that I assume that any replaced titles (if indeed there were any) were done long ago and not part of this DVD release.

Also, is it confirmed that Sony will issue subsequent volumes or is that still just speculation? If they are indeed fast tracking these as multiple releases per year an announcement for Vol 2 should be forthcoming.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure about the sound effects, but since they were dubbed from the beginning, It would have been easy for somebody to crank the volume up. Personally, I did not notice any difference.

The beautiful lady that you speak of is Christine McIntyre. In all honesty, I watch these shorts for her almost as much as I watch them for the Stooges.

From ThreeStooges.net:
"When the film was originally released, Marjorie White received top billing over the Three Stooges, who were credited as "Jerry Howard, Larry Fine, and Moe Howard." White was killed in an automobile accident shortly after the production (see Moe Howard & the 3 Stooges, p.78).

WOMAN HATERS was the sixth entry of a short subject series called "Musical Novelties," and all music in the short comes from the first five films. "My Life, My Love, My All" has new lyrics for WOMAN HATERS, but the music was originally titled "At Last" in a 1933 release called UM-PA."

I'm sure the original title card is long gone, but once the Stooges became a fixture at Columbia the title card was changed when the short was either re-released or distributed for television in the late 50s.

According to a very reliable source at the TS.net MB, Vol. 2 is "on the table", meaning it's being discussed but nothing is concrete. I'm sure they were waiting for the sales totals of Vol. 1. This was said maybe a week or so ago, so only time will tell...

Gosh. Based on accounts here of the enthusiasm surrounding this set and the difficulty of finding it in stores, I'd think another set would be a slam dunk.

But, then, since "enthusiasm" and "difficult time finding copies" are two events which have so many variables involved...I guess smart business-people will wait for the defining numbers: total sales.

Dpending on the scene you refer to, the actress was Geneva Mitchell (the dance instructor), Phyllis Crane or Betty McMahon (Prof. Nichols' two daughters).

Christine McIntyre was not in HOI POLLOI (1935). Her first Stooges comedy was IDLE ROOMERS (1944).

Matt,

Thanks for the information; much appreciated.

If the source at TS.net is correct, that does not bode well for a quick release of Vol 2. Given the lead time needed to design and produce the content much less manufacture the discs, it could be a year or two before Vol 2 comes out. (For reference, WHV says they plan releases up to 2 years in advance.) That assumes that restoration work is already complete on those shorts. Perhaps Sony's consultant, Mike Schlesinger, who is known to post Sony's plans on the monsterkid.com forums, can shed more light on this.

I'm pretty sure that the restoration has already been done for at least a few sets. Sony would really be shooting themselves in the foot if they release one set and then wait the length of time that it would take to restore and author futher sets. Any momentum would be completely lost and I seriously doubt that they are that stupid.

I have also seen several posts in varying locations from people who say that extras have already been worked on (interviews, documentaries, etc...) and that these will be included on future sets.

I think that this threatening marketing plan is only so much garabage. The Three Stooges are one of the most prominent brands in all of the classic film world and for Sony to hold us hostage is really childish. I would all but guarantee that we will see at the very least all of the Curly shorts....and would be equally shocked if we got less than two sets per year. If they don't do faster than that, then I'll start waiting for the next format.

Hmmm, I don't think she played any of those characters in Hoi Polloi, will have to check. She got some good full shots in Hoi Polloi, wearing a ball gown at the dance. In Three Little Beers, she was also quite visible as a golfer. In the Volume One shorts, I don't believe she had any dialogue at all. She is very often in the background, hardly visible sometimes, most noticeable because she's usually got this big smile, or is laughing. Edit: OK, I'll do this properly: 9:47 of Hoi Polloi, on the left, for instance.

Geez, these days everybody who breathed on somebody who was near the set gets in the credits...

Re: HTF DVD REVIEW: The Three Stooges Collection Vol. 1 (1934-1936) (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)

A couple of years ago I read an article on "collectible movie stars." It listed the Top Ten most valuable stars of each decade.

The Three Stooges were NUMBER ONE for both the 1930s and the 1940s!

That would flabbergast them -- but it does indicate a large collectors market willing to spend money. It's hard to believe the sales of this set won't be at least good enough to give us a second volume.

Of course, if they'd released chronological sets like this IN THE FIRST PLACE, sales would be even greater -- and they might be finished with it all by now!

That's right.

Before this EXCELLENT new collection, Sony released over 20+ single DVDs which people hated, because they were over-priced & had only 5 shorts.

But Sony obviously didn't have any sales problems w/ those hodge-podge single disc collections, because they did it over 20 times.

Sadly, I noticed Sony is taking 3 of the hodge-podge single discs Amarays, putting them in new boxes, & putting them for sale too!!!! They have 2007 copyrights.

I wish Sony would pull those inferior DVDs once & for all, move forward w/ the new collection & quit confusing their customers. They are diluting their own efforts as well as floating this "threatening marketing plan".
