Gmail in Mail.app (or iPhone)

I have been using Gmail with POP3 enabled to have gmail as an account in Apple's Mail client because gmail wasn't IMAP capable. Today I read on Paul Stamatiou's blog that "Google is slowly rolling out free IMAP access to all Gmail accounts" so I checked my accounts settings page and sure enough IMAP was listed on the POP3 tab and it was already enabled. So I deactivated the gmail pop3 acount in Mail and setup gmail as an IMAP account in Mail and it appears to work fine. This is my first experience with IMAP. A link in Paul's blog points HERE which gives a bit more tips and the steps at setting up IMAP in Mail and on an iPhone beyond Googles step that will help ensure better consistency. BTW HERE is the google page of supported apps linking to instructions.

Daryl, I started a conversation about this in How to fix iPhone email problems: Definitive Guide. You might want to chime in there.

Re: Gmail in Mail.app (or iPhone)

I have read about this and it's really exciting stuff! Everything you do on your iPhone is instantly refelected on the Google mail server and vice-versa.

The only problem is -- I just checked my Google Mail "Settings" and the IMAP still isn't showing up for me! Google issued a statement today indicating this new feature is being rolled out in "waves" -- so it may be a few days before everybody gets their new IMAP functionality.

Re: Gmail in Mail.app (or iPhone)

I've enabled IMAP in Gmail -- it appeared today. Pretty smooth transition. I had to create a new account for IMAP in Mail, so there's a minor hiccup in mail organization in turning off my old account setup and the new account setup. What seems to work is to first move all mail from my Inbox to folders. Then disable the POP account and enable the IMAP account in Mail. Then turn back on email download. Seems to work pretty well.

Re: Gmail in Mail.app (or iPhone)

I set up Imap for one of my gmail accounts on thunderbird, and THANK GOD I HAVE FOLDERS AGAIN! NOT JUST STUPID LABLES! =)

I cant wait till ALL of my accounts are transferred over. I will NEVER go back, plus I still have the awesome www.gmail.com access whenever I dont have access to my own imap aware mail app. I intend to try out mail tomorow once leopard is finalized on the macbook.

Re: Gmail in Mail.app (or iPhone)

Sam,
Can you expand on your folders vs labels issue? How did using POP elminate folders in Thunderbird? I've used Thunderbird and now Mail with GMAIL POP for a few years and I had no problem creating folders in either app. In Gmail, I don't use folders, labels, or anything, so maybe I misunderstand you.

Re: Gmail in Mail.app (or iPhone)

I need some help or IMAP knowledge

I now see that with IMAP enabled, my Mail has a new @Folder -- a thing I've never seen -- for my Gmail box. It seems to exactly replicate my Gmail setup. My Inbox seems to be unchanged as well. This @Folder wasn't there with POP. Is this normal?

Here's a screenshot

I'm working through the normal issues of merging an old email setup (and all its downloaded messages) with the new setup. But I guess I'm really ignorant of IMAP use.

I never used POP =) So having folders for Gmail is new to me.

I'm sorry DaveF. I don't have and knew I won't be getting and iPhone so I hadn't been keeping up on that thread, my bad.

I get that exact same @ sign in Mail also. I'm a totally newbie to IMAP and it's setup/usage so I have no clue why some get it and some don't. I only gave IMAP a trial run and found I really don't need it or benifit from it since I never access gmail from anywhere but home and only on one computer so today I went back to the POP3 setup with Gmail.

Glad I'm not alone. I've not tested it much, but it may be with IMAP, Gmail and your local Mail app are completely synchronized--folders and everything.

I'm going to stay with it for a while and see how it handles me checking Gmail online from work and checking mail from Mail.app at home.

Google just issued an official statement regarding the new GMAIL IMAP access (or lack thereof in some of our cases):

Re: Gmail in Mail.app (or iPhone)

Hoo-Ha!!

My IMAP just showed up in my Gmail "Settings" area.

I (very quickly) DELETED the old POP GMAIL account on my iPhone; and set up the new IMAP account utilizing the "Configuration Instructions" link that appears just below the new IMAP option.

This is ... Nice!! *All* of my Google email folders now appear on my iPhone! And when I read or delete an email on the iPhone the change (almost) immediately occurs on the Gmail account on my PC!

I'm in "email heaven"!

Re: Gmail in Mail.app (or iPhone)

Also, it's my understanding is that PoP folders are on your local machine only. In IMAP of course they are all server side, which rocks and doesnt require you to use as much back and forth bandwidth and is available no matter what front end you use.

2/3 now, I just dont have IMAP on my google mail private domain, still havent seen anything saying that they wouldnt have this feature on gmail for your domain, and since that supports POP I cant imagine it will be long till its official.

REALLY interested to see what Google announces tomorrow and down the line with the Google Phone now =)

Re: Gmail in Mail.app (or iPhone)

Well, that answers that, imap just went live in my gmail for my domain account.

I'm struggling a bit with managing multiple identities simultaneously in Thunderbird tho. For some reason it seems to be putting a copy of every SENT message I send out in my inbox. Not sure what I need to do to fix that.

Re: Gmail in Mail.app (or iPhone)

And THIS answers THAT.

"Thunderbird 2 changed the behavior when replying to a sender, where the sender is one of your multiple identities. It used to reply to that identity, now it uses the default identity. According to this bug report its by design. "
