Installing Leopard/Upgrading to Leopard question thread?

I figured I'd get this thread started since I already have a question about it.

When I get Leopard I'll most likely do an upgrade install to begin with for awhile. But I got to thinking if/when I decide to do a fresh/clean install of Leopard how would someone get iLife reinstalled if their computer came with the 2 CD install disks like my Macbook did without iLife being on a dedicated disk? I have no need to buy iLife 08.

Haven't checked the install DVD's in a while, but for years there's been a package installer on them just for "Addditional Applications" that would allow you to selectively choose which applications (including the iLife apps) that you want to reinstall.

Thanks Michael. And "DUH!!!" to myself. I found the answer in the help file.

By the way, come Friday morning I'll post a "sticky" thread
that will allow everyone to talk about their Leopard installations
and initial responses.

Re: Installing Leopard/Upgrading to Leopard question thread?

I use SuperDuper! to make an external firewire cloned bootable backup of my internal MacHD and use it's smart backup feature to keep it updated. I found out yesterday as another install option I could do an "Erase and Install" of Leopard and use the "Setup Migration" option during install to migrate everything during install from the external volume.

Agree with Daryl - I did a Super clone to firewire, checked the boot, then disconnected the drive before install.

Installation on a client iMac 2.16 was around 30 minutes or so - upgrade.
First boot was quite slow, but back to normal 2nd time around.
Spotlight goes to work with a new file check in the background, but doesn't take long to complete.

All native Apple apps are faster - perhaps 10-15%
Most custom folder icons will not work in the dock, but may be OK in your finder window.

Chances of 3rd party apps being harmful to Leo are small. If they don't work, you might get a dialog, but that's about it.
Quite a few devs will have updates in short order, so don't be too concerned unless it's something you can't live without.

My best install advice (aside from having a backup) is disconnect any additional drives with system info, either onboard or fire/usb bus and everything should go well. Actually, disconnect all externals just to be safe.
Repair permissions once everything's complete in spotlight.

Have Fun
