Your favorite childhood book? - Page 2

Re: Your favorite childhood book?

This isn't a joke necropost revival. Not only is this a fun topic that could probably continue with new people, but I have a "name that book" question. I don't think I'll have any luck, since I remember precious few details, but I'll give it a try.

It was a Dell Yearling book, with the same trade dress as this one:

It was from the same era--probably a '70s/early '80s book. I think the border was gold or yellow, and the image was of a boy in an autumnal suburban setting. For some reason, I always got the title confused with "The Fish That Ate Pittsburgh." I think it either had fish or monster in the title. I think it involved a little boy who was sad because his parents were divorced or divorcing, or his mother had died. I think he spent time at the movie theater.

Not a lot to go on, but this is a book I'd like to revisit. It used to be in a drawer at my parents' house, but the last time I looked, it was gone.

Edit: I think I found it. Betsy Byar's "The Two-Thousand Pound Goldfish." "Abandoned by a mother who is hiding from the FBI, Warren escapes into horror movie fantasies while he waits for her return." The cover art I've found doesn't look like I remember, but I think this may be it anyway. It was an Apple Scholastic book, not Dell Yearling. I found the title fairly quickly with a limited search on AbeBooks.

Tony mentioned a book about a mouse who rode a motorcycle. I think I found it in my searches. Beverly Cleary's Ralph S. Mouse and The Mouse and the Motorcycle.

Re: Your favorite childhood book?

Too many favorites to name, but aside from some of the ones mentioned here...
Roald Dahl's "The Magic Finger". This one has been re-released but the original edition artwork version is what makes this book truly haunting and magical.

Also, the cartoonish but epic-in-scale "Shaggy Fur Face", a great story about a lost dog just trying to find his way home.

"The Red Balloon"--both a great book and a great movie.

Also, anything by Scott Corbett or Beverly Cleary.

Re: Your favorite childhood book?

This is a good thread revival.

I loved reading as a kid and I still have some of my old books. My sister and I were really into book series like Trixie Beldon, Nancy Drew, Encyclopedia Brown, Nate the Great ( I actually met the author of this series), The Littles and Mrs Persephone. All great mystery series.

We also read:

The Little Miss and Mister books ( I still remember my mother buying me Mr. Chatterbox, because I talked so much).

Up Chuck Summer

Flowers for Algernon

Flowers in the Attic

There is a Hair in my toothbrush

Sleepwalking

The BFG

Little House on the Prairie (one of my favorite series)

Anne of Green Gables (my other favorite series)

My sister was HUGE into the Sweet Valley High series, but I never got into that one.

The Elevator to Nowhere

The Crystal Cave series

I still enjoying reading Young Adult books/series. There is some fantastic childrens literature out there.

Re: Your favorite childhood book?

I enjoyed reading 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' and 'Lion, Witch Wardrobe'.

Re: Your favorite childhood book?

Charlie and the chocolate factory and Charlie and the glass elevator should be required reading for all young ones.

I also highly recommend:

Life As We Knew It by Susan Pfeffer

The Dead and the Gone by Susan Pfeffer

The Tomorrow series by John Marsden

Gils All Fright Diner by A. Lee Martinez

Fearless by Francine Pascal
